Steve, the way you are stealing talent in this draft, someone is eventually going to poach you away to be a great GM.

Thank you so much for being a HUGE piece in the cultural turnaround for the Cardinals. Your work is noticed and appreciated.

I give credit to the entire FO but I think you are correct that the master mind is Keim.

I just texted TJ the same thing. Need to name him GM before someone else does.

No doubt, Keim deserves enormous credit, but part of the success goes to a working environment where the GM and owner keep things calm and deliberate.

Keim deserves some credit for sure, but we have some talented scouts working under him right now.

Why not just pay him more than now. A lot more responsibilities that he may or may not want to have on his shoulders spreading him thin.

Right now he can do what he loves, being a GM adds a lot more legwork in other areas.

Pay the man like a GM to continue in his job.

Keim has to stay here otherwise the Cardinals would lose a tremendous asset.

Why not give him a huge raise - even to the point of overpaying him - to ensure he stays?

Shane, I guess I'll be more specific. Our drafting has improved since Steve moved into his present posotion.

If he does leave us, we can always bring back George Boone. He was always good for having the national media "chime" with witty comments about our drafts.

Seriously though, Keim has been awsome. Hope he remains with us for a long time. The thought of him going to St.L. this past offseason was very disappointing.

Go Cards!!!

+1

Yet, I feel Keim is this organizations biggest asset. Not to mention he doesn't have what most other people in his position have in support of his wants.

Yet, that being said he get the absolute most out of what he is given, which is why is so valuable in my opinion.

I think the Cardinals HAVE TO lock him down in this organization.

I am in total agreement with you on this Muffin-----in his present position, Keim has become beyond valuable to the Cardinals.

As I've posted, I think that Steve and his people do a great job. But it seems that after every draft, the FO announces a scouting reorg and fires a couple of scouts. Will this year be any different?

How do we know it was Keim and not Graves? I know Graves has a bad record, but I don't know if that's enough to assume Keim was the reason for all these 'good' picks. Heck, we don't even know if any of these guys will turn out to be good. I bet at that point you guys will blame Graves and forget this thread never happened.

I'm not trying to defend Graves but I'm just sayin'...

You can know by understanding this:

Graves and Keim have both been here a long time. Last year, however, Keim was promoted to Head Scout AND Director of Player Personnel. In that function, he has a lot to say about what kind of personnel we bring in.

Prior to last year's free agent and draft periods, the position coaches would ask for specific players. We constantly got O'linemen who were mauler types, (but we seldom ran the ball). Our O-linemen had trouble pass blocking, at least the tackles did. That is why there is so much hate for Levi Brown on this board. He had one hell of a time learning the pass block speed rushers successfully. Until last year, we also drafted, and signed FA cornerbacks who could cover, but we played them off the line, and they couldn't, (or wouldn't) tackle. When Horton came in, he and Keim started going after corners could could tackle also. Now Horton can play them all over the place, (even as safeties). It is working.

We took no O-linemen last year, but EVERY ONE we took this year can pass block. Don't you suppose that Keim told the position coaches that they were wasting time and money by taking run-blockers. We pass the ball, and now we have drafted three O-linemen who can pass block, Hallelulia !!

Incidently, take note that Levi opted to come back to us in free agency, modifiying his contract to a more reasonable one. That says a lot about his character in my opinion. Maybe some on this board will begin to understand that he is much better that we give him credit for as he continues to improve this year.

Kiem may certainly share his views on personnel, but he DOESN"T TELL COACHES what their needs are. That's their job to define; his is to take the shopping list and send his scouts out and supervise the process of finding the best 120 prospects for drafting. It's a collaborative effort with much sharing, but all, I'm sure, jealously protect their perogatives.

I wish we all had more of an inside eye on how the scouting process works in AZ - from the long drives to the boonies, the interviews with coaches, side trips to the dorms (to learn how classmates regard prospects) to how reports are structured and how they're presented.

But that said - ask yourself this: Without Keim, do we wind up bringing in good players from such places as St. Paul College, Presbyterian or St. Anselm? (Wow)!

This is the split of responsibilities in the Cards organization.

Day to Day Business / Contracts = Graves

Scouting / Draft = Keim

Football = Whis

These cross over frequently

True. But this begins with scouts, over a year, checking some 2500 to 3000 eligible players and then Keim supervising the cutting down to the final 120.

I believe Keim is too valuable to let go. Wasn't he contacted for the Ram job this past offseason?

Yes he was in the final 2 for their GM. Ironically Wolfley was discussing this yesterday with his draft recap. He definitely gave Keim most of the credit for this draft.
