Steve Wilks not bashful about benching starters

The decision to go with rookie quarterback Josh Rosen over veteran Sam Bradford necessarily becomes the most noteworthy personnel decision made by new Cardinals coach Steve Wilks. But, as explained by Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic, Wilks has made clear his willingness to yank established players at will.

McManaman points to a sequence late in Sunday’s latest loss for the Cardinals. Starting running back David Johnson was pulled due to a mental error and, as Johnson was hearing about his blunder from position coach Kirby Wilson, rookie Chase Edmonds lost three yards on a critical third down and two.
I was very confident in the call,” Wilks said. “I was very confident in Chase being in there.”

Plenty of fans don’t share that confidence, blaming the loss to the Bears on the decision not to use Johnson in that moment. Still, it’s all part of Wilks’ stubborn insistence on a true meritocracy.

“I think as a man, if you look in the mirror and say, ‘You know what? I’m not performing well,'” Wilks said. “‘Coach has given me every opportunity to be able to step up and play.’ I think I’ve shown to these players throughout the best 11 are going to play. We’re going to keep the best 53, whether you’re a draft pick or a free agent. The opportunity is there and one thing about it, there’s no favoritism. I want guys out there that are going to be out there making plays and that are going to help us win football games. And that’s the opportunity that you’re given each week.”

So far, the players who have played in the first three weeks collectively haven’t made enough of their opportunities to secure a win. And it gets no easier this week, when the Cardinals head to Seattle.

"The best 11 are going to play"

I think Wilks needs to start listening to himself speak.

Mr. Wilks, you telling me Chase Edmonds is better than David Johnson ? If you are, then you are fired.

Losing sucks.

Are we being a bit tough on a guy that has only coached 3 games and with a roster that is becoming even more obviously inferior in talent? Our last 6 1st rd picks (2012-2017) are not doing very well. I think we have 1 starter at LT (mediocre) and RK is starting now for first time in 3 years. I do like that he has benched players quickly...a big departure from the stubborn BA (love BA though).

Bradford, lack of WR's, street FA starting LB's, still no #2 CB (I like Bene but again, he was a street FA), Mike McCoy, and a switch to the 4-3. I guess we shouldn't be surprised we are struggling right now.

Keim is definitely at fault. He drafted these guys and his best draft pick ever (DJ) was an accident. The other RB he wanted so badly was a legit bust.

McCoy - easily the whipping boy right now. Based on what we have experienced from him(lots of data points)...it doesn't look good.

Wilks - He will be given time to demonstrate he can be a successful NFL HC. He has certainly made some big mistakes already. If he can learn from them and eliminate future mistakes like that...he has a chance. Not enough history to judge at this point.

All I’m saying is that Bruce took the same general roster and managed to win with Drew Stanton. This is not the least talented team in the league.

I believe BA started 1-3 with Carson Palmer in his first year. Also, he had nearly a full year of head coaching experience with the Colts.

Not making excuses but lets have a little bit of patience. The man has been a HC for 3 games. I hope he can learn/adapt to the challenges and excel.

They need to look at what made DJ great in his first season. Constantly running him up the middle wasnt it. DJ does better when he runs sweeps and he has the momentum working in his favor.

DJ was not an accident. He had him on his board & drafted him. Just because he had another rb ranked higher means nothing. Multiple other teams did as well. The draft is a crap shoot. That's why the majority of 1st rd picks are busts & why you'll see an occasional late rounder or UDFA become a star. Our drafting is on par with the rest of the league & slightly above average.

Indeed. What was the point of playing a fullback again? Sure as heck isn't making the run game any better.

The first thing that pops to my mind is when Mike Singletary took this same approach with Vernon Davis. While I agree with the sentiment it is not enough to overcome coaching deficiencies. That Wilks has turned Johnson and Bradford into shells of their former selves seems like a problem.

This.
I'll add that any and every RB that Detriot obtains becomes a bust in the past decade.

I can't believe Wilks doubled down and said he wants the best 11 out there. This implies Edmonds is better than Johnson. Which hey, may be true in your eyes but if it is let's trade DJ to one of the other 31 teams in the league who disagree and get something of value for him. Amazing. All he has to do is say "yeah after watching the tape we had plenty of time to explain things to DJ and he should have been out there. We'll learn from this and move forward." Fans would forgive this, but don't give me this blitz pickup crap. You knew you weren't calling a passing play on 3rd and 2 anyway. Total idiot.

Wilks is a train wreck at this point. Doesn't mean he is a moron or idiot. Pederson in Philadelphia sounded like an idiot his first year and the fans and experts were wondering how long it would be until he got fired.

Ok...this is good, in principle.

I get why Deone Bucannon has been benched and it is for good reasons.

Same with Reddick.

I get why you want to establish a culture where hard work is rewarded and where players are held accountable.

Jamar Taylor and Benwickere. I get it.

TJ Logan for Brandon Williams...i will take his word on it.

The DJ issue is not justifiable. Period.

Not understanding that REddick and Bucannon would not be starters in your system prior to free agency is not justifiable. Period.

Hiring a bad OC who had no plan for DJ is not justifiable. Period.

If you’re referring to Tevin Coleman or Duke Johnson, it’s way too early to call either one a bust.
