The Stone Memorial soccer team had to fight off a hard-fought challenge from White County late last week before coming out on top in a 2-1 victory in Sparta.

The Panthers scored first in the opening period and led 1-0 at halftime. Stone Memorial came back with another goal early in the second half. White County scored just minutes later to make it 2-1, ultimately the final score.

“I would say last night the first 10 minutes, White County brought everything they had,” said Stone Memorial Coach Micah Grenz. “But I think our guys knew that was going to be coming, and so they were ready for it, and we held on to that. I’d say we controlled the rest of the first half.

“The second half was kind of back and forth. We scored pretty quick right after halftime to make it 2-0, but then they scored right after that to make it 2-1. So any team, no matter how good they are, if they have confidence they’re going to play a lot better than what they had been playing with out the confidence. White County had confidence.”

Stone’s offense got started when Oliver Fuentes put the ball in the back of the net with a shot in the 19th minute to make it 1-0.

“Before they played us, White County had won four of their last five games,” Grenz said. “And in the games they had won, they scored 31 goals. So no matter who you’re playing, if you’re averaging scoring eight goals a game, like you know you can put the ball in the back of the net. So I think our team handled that well. Any time you get a district win, it’s pretty cool.”

Grenz said he didn’t switch a lot at halftime as his team headed back on the field. He wanted everyone to tighten up on defense and possess the ball.

Stone’s Johnathan Warlick scored for the Panthers in the 42nd minute, but White County came right back in the 45th minute, to make it 2-1. Then, the race was on.

“If something isn’t broke, like don’t try and fix it,” Grenz said. “I thought we played well defensively. I mean, having two seniors in the middle in the back, and Kayne Bosanko is solid. He’s like a coach back there. He’s smarter than most people on this planet. I give him all the credit.”

Grenz also praised the play of rookie goalkeeper Dylan Phillips, who has only been playing organized soccer for abut 90 days. He said what makes Phillips a gem in the net is he doesn’t make the same mistake on the field twice.
