Stoudemire Enjoyed Olympics

He played hardly at all. His team is viewed as a failure for merely winning the bronze medal.

And yet, Amare Stoudemire describes his Olympic basketball experience as positive.

"All in all, it was fun," says Stoudemire, who is back at work, taking part in the Suns’ informal scrimmages.

Stoudemire got to see new countries such as Greece, Germany, Serbia and Turkey. And though he sat the bench, he still learned, saying coach Larry Brown worked extensively with him after practices.

"He gave me 45 minutes of his time after practices. Working out with him was the highlight of the Olympics."

It’s no surprise Stoudemire didn’t get much time.

Brown seldom plays young players. And Stoudemire pointed out that LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and himself probably were the youngest players ever on the Olympic team.

With this in mind, wouldn’t the team have been better off with more experienced role players and fewer young "big-name" young players such as Stoudemire?

"I wouldn’t necessarily say that," said the 21-year-old, admitting he’s not the most neutral observer on this key question.

"That would disqualify me from the Olympics."

boy is his tone differant from that crybaby melo. the idea that he got 45 minutes everyday with brown really bring a lot to the fans who hope that the summer would really work to help him out. i cant wait to see him in action this season. with a summer of good work and a new point guard who is very good at getting the ball to the right player it looks to be a promising season.

This shows a lot of maturity on Amare's part. Deep down, you know he had to be yearning to get on the basketball court, and we all know he would've helped them out, but he seems to have a good perspective on what was at stake and why Larry Brown made the decisions he made. It's also nice to see Amare working hard at improving his game while he was over in Athens because with so many games, I can understand how he might be tired after practices and real game action. And learning from Larry Brown 45 minutes a day is never a bad thing.

I expect special things from Stoudemire this season.

Was it Charlie Rosen or Mike Kahn who wrote that Amare Stoudemire was a problem for Larry Brown?

An awful lot was made of his being a minute late to that team meeting. Amare didn't play much so it was assumed he must have done something wrong.

Change in subject, I think it would be interesting to have an all star game between the US and foreign born NBA players using FIBA rules and refs. Unlike the current all star game which is not taken seriously, this game would get the juices going but not give one team an advantage of playing together over an extended period like playing national teams.

I think the international team would be competative. Some of the backup positions are weak (any suggestions?), but it would be using FIBA rules.

C - Dalembert, Nesterovic, Okur
PF - Nowitzki, Gasol, Nene
SF - Stojakovic, Kirilenko
SG - Ginobili, Giricek
PG - Parker, Barbosa

Maybe in 5 years, and idea like that would be plausible. An American vs foreign team would be no contest. Unlike other international competitions, both teams would have to do with NO practice time.

Not to mention, how many American fans would want to see that? The weekend break is supposed to be for the fans, at least that is how they market it. Not to mention, so many players would get all star bids on their resume who dont deserve it. We thought the East vs West led to some unworthy players being there....

My personal feeling is since the allstar game doesn't mean anything, why should it be east versus west? Why not have fans/coaches vote for the best players from both league, and seperate them after the fact. That way the most worthy players get to be called all stars. They also should become more lax on positional requirements, at least thats what I think.

edit: As for recomendations, I would throw Duncan in at C. Wasn't he born in the virgin islands? Don't forget Nash and Magloire are both from Canada. Luol Deng could make it as a backup too

Ming and Magloire would be the top two foreign-born centers.

My problem with that set up is that there is already a limited number of all-star spots. Every year there are guys there seemingly deserving that just can't go because there aren't enough spots. If they did a USA versus the world system that would be much worse because there would only be 12-14 roster spots available to the players from the USA.

My secret agenda is to get the US players to learn to play FIBA rules (OK it's not a secret any more).

It was late. How could I forget Yao and Magloire?

Who am I forgetting at guard? I can't believe Giricek is the second best foreign born SG.
