Could somone explain what a strech play is? Sporting News had an article on why this was one of the plays Green used in Minn. with Robert Smith and it also said that it is one that Edge does so well, so we could expect to see them use it allot.

As I understand it

-- the stretch play is play is where the entire line blocks down in the direction of the play -- i.e. if its a run right, then the o-line from tackle to tackle is basically trying to drive his guy back and right -- with the thought of "stretching" the defensive line laterally. The back gets the handoff relatively deep in the backfield and has the freedom to take whatever hole in the line that presents itself.

I know in Madden, the stretch play basically has the QB take the snap under center and almost bootlegs parallel to the line of scrimmage. He hands off or does play action only about a yard deep with the line crashing the same way as the QB is running. The RB takes the hand off and can either A) run with the play, crashing right or B) cut back and find a hole. Works like a charm.

If we do use the stretch play more often it tells me that we are going to finally be using some sort of zone blocking schemes which we havent done ever and are changing the way the OL blocks, we may look for a blocking TE in the draft, Hodgins is still in our plans as sort of a blocking h-back, and we most likely will not be drafting or signing any big fatty OL who cant move such as Giles or Larry Allen when he was a FA.

I've perfected a stretch play at home, but it's a bit different

Blocking schemes are not my forte, but as I understand it, the primary duty of most O-line guys during stretch plays is to wall off and "seal" the outside rather than to blast anyone backward. This places greater emphasis on pulling-skills, mobility and then holding the block once in position than it does pure drive-blocking power. A greater premium figures to be placed on technique.

(Note - I'd suspect that on stretch plays, someone has to still watch the inside to prevent pursuing LB's and DE's from coming down to cut off the runner's "back door.")

That is usually the FB or TE if lined up on the opposite side. There is also a modified or strong side Strech play were there is no help on the cut back lane putting a greater emphasis on the strong side running lanes, It is up to the RB to know that his choices are limited to the holes in front of him and the outside, he knows to not take a cut back lane in that situation.

Help me out here, JoeShmo -

When we pick apart the components of the stretch play, I get the feeling that the skills required of offensive linemen are mainly (a) be able to pull and get to your "spot on the map" and (b) basically do the same thing you do when you pass block (i.e. keep guys from penetrating laterally into the lane rather than drive them backwards). This simplifies the skills a lineman needs in order to be effective (i.e. if you can pass block and pull, you can be execute the running play).

Is that the deal here?

You got the right idea.
