Representatives from three Columbus high schools say they face an uphill battle each year with funding athletics.

Reginald Williamson, the athletic director at Independence High School, said a big part of the problem is that 15 high schools in Columbus City Schools have large budgets. Oftentimes, he said funding for those schools can take away from schools with smaller budgets that need money.

Chaadash Edwards, a South High School basketball player, said his parents had to pay for his equipment.

"Columbus City Schools don’t fund their sports as much as they could in terms of getting new basketballs or team gear and equipment every year," he said.

CCS Social requested sports funding information from the district. That information was not made available by publication time.

Trent Smith, baseball head coach at Independence, said, “We need bats. The school don't buy them we buy them. Either the kids buy their own or I buy bats."

Smith said that Independence baseball doesn't have ticket sales and the majority of their money comes from fundraising at the State Fair or out of pocket.

“If I had a big pot of gold that we could just go out and do whatever we wanted to do with each and every athletic team, that would be phenomenal," said Gary Davis, athletic director at Centennial High School.

But Davis said the reality is, "there’s a lot of need across the state of Ohio for financial pieces within all athletics."
