Synopsis of Suggs workout today:

Suggs stood at 6-3 3/8 and 257 pounds. The first time Suggs ran the 40, it was a consensus 4.86 (meaning everyone had him clocked in that range). The second time, he ran for a high of 4.9 and a low of 4.77, depending on whose watch you're looking at. He ran better the second time, according to people there.

He did 19 reps, had a 32½-inch vertical and a 9-foot long jump. He added a 4.33 in the short shuttle and a 7.48 in the three-cone drill.

Falcons national scout Mike Hagen was there, and here is his analysis:

"He looked a lot better once he got started into the football drills, but he didn't run as expected.

"We're talking about a guy who's a potential top 10 pick, and he didn't post those kinds of numbers. He's just one of those guys who's not a workout guy, but if you like him as a football player, then these things shouldn't bother you. With a helmet and pads on, he's a very productive, highly-successful player against top competition.

"But his workout won't influence my grade on this kid. I have him getting a high first-round grade."

Those are surprising numbers. Wonder if the weight he put on affected his speed?

I am very, very hopeful he will be there @ 6 when we pick. That workout must have raised some eyebrows...... I think this is good news for us. :)

more of an update..other asu players listed..

ARIZONA STATE: MARCH 26
The Sun Devils had two Pro Days. Suggs worked out on March 26, the rest worked out on March 14.

On the 26th, with Suggs as the main event, over 100 NFL people there. Houston had seven people there, including their owner, Bob McNair, his son, and GM Charlie Casserly and head coach Dom Capers. Mike Brown, the Bengals owner, was there along with head coach Marvin Lewis. And both Matt Millen and Steve Mariucci were there, representing the Lions. Those three franchises hold the first three picks in April's draft. Head coaches Marty Schottenheimer and Jack Del Rio were also on hand.
Player Position Gil's comments

Terrell Suggs DE Suggs stood at 6-3 3/8 and 257 pounds.

I thought he would run faster, but I also thought Jerry Rice would run faster and he didn't. A lot of times, 40 times can be deceiving because players can play a lot faster on the field with equipment on.

Falcons national scout Mike Hagen was there, a man with years and years of valuable experience. Here is his analysis on Suggs:

"He looked a lot better once he got started into the football drills, but he didn't run as expected.

"We're talking about a guy who's a potential top 10 pick, and he didn't post those kinds of numbers. He's just one of those guys who's not a workout guy, but if you like him as a football player, then these things shouldn't bother you. Solomon Bates LB Bates came in at 6-1 and 244 pounds. He ran the 40 twice for times of 4.78 and 4.79. He lifted the bar 22 times. He had a 30½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-4 in the long jump, a 4.26 in the short shuttle and a 6.85 in the three-cone drill.

Shaun McDonald WR McDonald was 5-8 5/8 and 175 pounds. He ran the 40 in 4.47 and 4.46 seconds on outdoor Astroturf. He had a 33½-inch vertical, a 9-foot long jump, a 4.07 in the short shuttle, and a 6.85 in the three-cone drill.

Mike Pinkard TE Pinkard was 6-5 3/4 and 263 pounds. He didn't do a lot, but did run the 40 in 4.7 and 4.68 seconds. He had a 9-foot-8 long jump and a three-cone time of 7.05 seconds.

bates #'s are slightly better than suggs..problem is that he is 13 lbs lighter...but if I read it right bates did more bench press reps.

The difference in Suggs's times could be the result of a scout's thumb hitting a stopwatch a fraction of a second late.

To think that he's any faster or slower than he was a month ago is silly. This whole combine-workout process is silly. People talk themselves out of drafting productive players based on these 40 times as if they're laser-timed or accurate at all!

if this helps us get suggs I'll be thrilled, but really, he's the exact same player he was yesterday, I hardly see how this matters.

A "consensus 4.86" which means multiple stop watches. The fastest he ran was about a 4.8.

For a guy that is undersized, it has to raise some question marks. I would say now he is no longer refered to as a "Sure Thing".

This less than jaw dropping workout will help us get Suggs at 6. The teams drafting ahead of us will overanlayze every little detail of every little aspect before drafting a player in the top 5. They have to, there is too much riding on it.

Terrell wants to play in Arizona, so he didn't run as fast he could. He's got a promise from Graves/whoever that we'll pick him at 6 if he's there. The money wouldn't be that different from where he's likely to be picked at (3-5), and he likes it here.

;)

I think we just might have a chance at the #6 spot after all with Suggs. I would love to see him fall to us.

And sometimes they talk themselves into drafting a player earlier than they should just because of a stellar 40 time at the Combine. For instance taking someone like Peek or Calico in the second round. ;)

Suggs still could come to us. It's something that may happen yet, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that right now.

YES!!!!!!!

This is better news than Smith signing! In the Holiday Bowl, Suggs came all the way across the field to run down, from behind, a K-State WR who ran a reverse. I'm blanking on the WR's name, but he's darn fast. He was their punt returner too. I don't care what Suggs' 40 time is, he's a fast football player. This really gets my hopes up that we can land him at #6.

ahahah!

well I'll give you hald a "zing" on that one. I saw Peek play 5 times this year. I am convinced that his performance on the field merits the pick. The 40 time only reinforces his burst.

But Calico, him I'm just guessing on :)

I wish that were so true! Impossible, he won't fall to #6, if he does, money talks and he will be another 1st round holdout by the Cards.

Post bump from 2003......

Please don't trade down too far, Cardinals, if you are going to trade down.

As you can see, history shows it hasn't been kind to us. What could have been if we stayed at 6 or traded to the most 10.

It's all about what's on the board. There very well might not be a Suggs type player we pass on by trading back in this draft (especially if Simmons is already gone).
