Assessing day one is relatively easy. For a pleasant change, the Cards didn’t reach or make any strange selections. They took two players capable of being impact players, though not likely next year. DRC clearly has more upside than any corner in this draft. In fact, he’s likely the best potential corner to come out of the draft since his namesake. He’s no sure thing, but while good corners can be found after the mid-first round; potential number one corners typically go earlier. Corner is one of the toughest positions to evaluate. This kid wasn’t even a great college corner. If he had been and gone early in the draft he might have rested on his laurels. As it is, he likely will make enough money to whet his appetite for the really big contract and I do not expect motivation to be a problem. He figures to challenge Green for a starting slot and don’t be surprised if he gets it. He’ll get burned, but he’ll also burn a few teams in the process.

Campbell is a steal. Don’t let the workouts fool you as they did so many scouts. This kid was a top 10 pick until the Hurricanes fell apart. These types of teams often take their best players down with them. Ask Boldin. Campbell is a warrior and will respond to good coaching. He’s a defensive end, but he does okay dropping back into coverage, partially because he has the wingspan of a 757. Forget also what they tell you about timed speed; he has game speed and enough to get to QBs and run down plays from behind. He has a surprisingly sophisticated set of moves already and a little polishing will go a long with this guy. He may never be an elite player, but he will be a very good player who will add needed depth and strengthen the defensive line rotation. Like Wadsworth, he can move inside if necessary, as he anchors well for his height.

This is one draft which will likely take a couple of years to judge. Yes, I would have liked Kevin Smith, but he’s still on the board! The Cards did well and if the football gods smile upon them, things should turn out fine.

A good day

I was pleased with the draft so far and would love to see the Cards concentrate even more on defense on day two. One OL man would be nice and though I think a WR to fill the spot left vacant by Johnson would be nicer than looking at a HB...there really does not seem to be any WRs that jump out at me to fill it.

Glad you like both of them. DRC pick was more of a 'safe / need' pick for me, but he does have huge upside.

I'm most excited about Campbell. He seems very motivated, based on the videos I have watched of him so far.

Yeah, I agree. Even though I wanted them to roll the dice the pick of Cromartie allowed them to be totally flexable with the second pick and they got first round value there easily. He's probobly not a top 10 but definately top 20 with a better Miami team. When the Cards pick came near, I was thinking he was the no brainer. I was only concerned if he was "coachable". Your saying he is, so that makes it even more exciting!

Again, I don't know if they discussed this alot before the draft , but going CB first with Cromartie (something I think they really wanted, him being available) let them be completly flexable and it really paid off big time it looks like.

Now your right, we need that RB selection next or they better be prepared to sign Kevin Jones or something.

But the important thing is these picks seem to be made for NEXT year. DRC to replace Green if he leaves and Campbell for Antonio Smith. Good teams draft for what they need next year, not this year. I love the picks.

Kevin Smith

If the Cards go HB, I have always liked Smith and would be happy with it. I had Campbell as one of the selections and I had Smith. I would love to see Smith added to the roster.

Teams still likely looking at RBs include Rams, Lions, Patriots, Bengals, Bucs and maybe the Colts. Remember even if they aren't in front of the Cards, they could move up.

I like both of the picks. DRC was the pick I wanted most and Campbell has alot of potential. He could be the next Julius Peppers. Nice draft so far. We still need a backup OT and OG. We now have our third WR in Doucet.
