Tough to play Long Beach State to start the season. ASU could be 0-3.

True. Let's hope not!

They started out well against Florida State last year, though. This better be the year they get back to Omaha. The past few years have been frustrating.

I can't wait for this season too. And playing a tough schedule is nothing new to this team. Murphy has to find a way to get us back to Omaha, especially after that new contract. I believe we have 6 offensive starters back. Hopefully Larish will overcome his case of "draft-itis" and regain his form from his sophmore year. Maybe the move back to the infield will help. Either way Buck and Gosewisch should take some pressure off of him and lead our offense. I'm looking forward to seeing what Joey Hooft is going to do. I heard he is a candidate to take over the lead off spot from the departed Pedro.

Urquadez and Averill should anchor our pitching staff along with Zinicola. We have a couple JC transfer that will also be in the mix.

I also can't wait to see the new renovations at Packard! Hopefully, that will help draw some more fans.

Go Devils!

Should be a great series as the Dirtbags are a perennial power out west. I love starting the season against a ranked team. Looks like we have Averill going Friday, Urquidez on Saturday, and Bordes on Sunday. Hopefully Bordes has put his last couple starts behind him...

I know it's early, but what's going on this year. We lost Sunday - that makes four losses in a row back to last week's at Arizona.

I keep telling myself that we have an unbelievably hard schedule, but I'm starting to worry. :(

Unranked ASU lugs 5-game skid to UA

Jeff Metcalfe

Out of the national rankings for the first time in six years and 100 consecutive polls, Arizona State baseball tries to break a five-game losing streak today at No. 7 Arizona.

The Sun Devils ( 6-8 ) were swept at No. 4 Tulane over the weekend and are 1-6 against top 25 teams. That includes a 7-6 loss in 14 innings at UA last week.

ASU last lost five in a row in 1999, when it last was unranked, and is on its first five-game non-conference losing streak since 1985.

"We could be 13-1 (against an easier schedule) and none of this would be revealed," ASU head coach Pat Murphy said. "You've got to give us something for having the courage to do this and go for it. You've got to reveal who you are and take it. The question is, can we crawl out of it?"

No major lineup changes are expected, although redshirt freshman Rocky Laguna and true freshmen Willy Fox, DJ Butler and pitcher Seth Garrison showed enough at Tulane to warrant more looks.

Laguna robbed the Green Wave of a three-run homer with a catch above the right-field fence, and Fox hit a two-run opposite field homer in the series finale.

Freshman center fielder J.J. Sferra missed the final Tulane game due to a foot injury. Zechry Zinicola did not pitch in the series because of a jammed hand.

Kevin Dryanski (0-0, 2.25 ERA), a junior college transfer, is expected to start today. Ty Marotz and Zinicola, if healthy, also could pitch.

Game two also goes to the Wildcats as they beat ASU 11-5. Andy Lopez has brought the program back. Coulon is going to be a really special pitcher for the Wildcats. He is only a freshman and throws some nasty stuff. Struck out 6 Sun Devils tonight in only 4 innings.

Between our CWS appearance last year and our Top 10 ranking this year combined with the awful job Murphy has done recently and the sub-500 squad he's running out there now, I guess UA has surpassed ASU in baseball for the time being at least.

Over the past four years, which have been the worst in the history of Arizona football, the Cats still managed to split with ASU and own the better all-time record against Tempe.

Basketball isn't even a discussion but aside from the records, let's just reiterate that Arizona is known as Point Guard U while ASU is known as Point Shaving U.

Anybody else seeing a pattern here?

I was thinking about that today when Gambo and the Ash vacation-replacement were talking basketball and trashing Rob Evans - Seems to me the dart needs to hit the AD's forehead - ASU ball - -- foot-, basket-, and base- -- all started the seasons with lots of high hopes and promise, and last year and this year, failed to deliver.

I fell in love with Andy Lopez last year, and despite having slightly more connection to ASU, to me it just seems like the sports climate and the decisions being made at U of A are much more positive.

ASU seems to win a lot of their televised games on the last at bat. I like it.

ASU's recruiting class for the upcoming season has been ranked as the second-best class in the nation by Baseball America. Vanderbilt earned the top billing in the annual survey, while Texas was third.

Go Devils !!!

Just caught this bit of baseball news...

A bit of 'Heaven' for the Devils?

Bob Young
The Arizona Republic

The Heat Index gets carried away sometimes with Olympians who pose in men's magazines, Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues, Russian ladies who play tennis and Russian ladies who play tennis and actually win tournaments.

However, we want to be fair.

Our spies have passed on this little nugget that will be of special interest to our female readers and could create a whole new legion of Arizona State baseball fans that scream really loudly.

It seems coach Pat Murphy is recruiting a player from Santiago High in Corona, Calif., who will be familiar to fans of 7th Heaven, the show on the WB about a minister, his wife and all the stuff that goes on with their seven kids.

One of the stars of the show is teen heartthrob Tyler Hoechlin (pronounced heck-lin), who plays the part of a neighbor named Martin Brewer. He also played Tom Hanks' son in the 2002 flick, Road to Perdition.

And he evidently plays a mean third base, although ASU officials aren't allowed to comment on recruits until signing day, even if they happen to be big Hollywood stars.

However, Hoechlin's high school coach, Ty De Trinidad, confirmed the Sun Devils are pursuing Hoechlin, who made his official visit to the campus Saturday.

"Very much so," he said. "He flew back Sunday and he was really excited about ASU."

He'll have to choose between the Sun Devils, San Diego State, Southern California and UC Riverside.

"He's just a great kid all around," De Trinidad said. "He's been a starter since his sophomore year at third base, and he's just one of those kids that gives 110 percent to everything he does. He's the kind of kid coaches say, 'I wish I had 10 of him.' "

But can he play? The 6-foot-1 Hoechlin hit .378 last season with no home runs, but De Trinidad said he's filling out and much stronger.

"He's a gap-to-gap guy," De Trinidad said. "He runs really well, throws right and bats from the left side, which makes him more of a threat."

De Trinidad said Hoechlin does "independent studies" during the fall semester, but will be at Santiago in the spring when baseball starts.

"When he's here, he's just Tyler Hoechlin the student and baseball player, not the actor," he said. "He's just some guy trying to get a scholarship like everybody else. He's a nice kid. His parents have really done a good job with him."

Yeah, well maybe his real parents. We're not so sure about his 7th Heaven parents.

Seems young Mr. Brewer (who also plays baseball) rounded third during a little summer fling with a character played by Haylie Duff, and may or may not be the father of her child. Stay tuned.
