Early in their expansion history, Jerry Colangelo's Phoenix Suns had a Cinderella year and advanced to the finals. With a triple-overtime loss to the Celtics (the greatest game in NBA history) and not having the home court advantage, they did not win the Championship.

Early in their expansion history, Jerry Colangelo's Arizona D'backs had a Cinderella year and advanced to the World Series. Helped by having the home field advantage, they won the Championship (the earliest expansion team in Major League history).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the thirty years which have followed, the Suns returned to the finals once, when Charles Barkley was brought in to change the image of the team for a brief period. Before and after, their reputation has been:

THEY PLAY DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF THEIR COMPETITION and
THEY LACK THE FIRE TO FINISH OFF THIER OPPONENTS IN CLOSE GAMES!

And since the Diamondbacks World Series victory, except for the BabyBacks brief period, their reputation has become:

THEY PLAY DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF THEIR COMPETITION and
THEY LACK THE FIRE TO FINISH OFF THIER OPPONENTS IN CLOSE GAMES!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The D'backs have one of the most dependable pitching staffs in baseball (except for Mike Myers, who'll be outta here shortly and Elmer Dessens, who just cannot hold on to a lead, whether going 7 innings as a starter or 3 innings in relief).

But Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling are not going to be around to lead this staff for much longer. How frustrating it will be if the 14 position players stay in the rut that has plagued the Suns for over 30 years:

THEY PLAY DOWN TO THE LEVEL OF THEIR COMPETITION and
THEY LACK THE FIRE TO FINISH OFF THIER OPPONENTS IN CLOSE GAMES!

This is why you do everything possible when you have a chance to win it all. You may not have another chance for a long time. (unless you're the Yankees)

Just ask any Red Sox or Cubs fans.

THat is such BS - I think people tend to forget that even with all the ridiculous amount of injuries we had last season - WE STILL WON 100 games AND THE WEST - hell we were even still favorites until Gonzo went down - this city is lucky to have the Colangelos - would any other other owner trade Jason Kidd - no - you know why Jerry did? Bceause he realized that Suns team was NEVER going to win the cahmpionship - so rebuild. Give me a freaking break. We aren't hitting right now and everyone's all over the backs - we are in year one of our two year window - I can't believe you're complaining about an owner who has brought this city two NBA finals, numerous Conference Finals and a World Series championship.

Anybody who rails on Colangelo for these reasons needs to be shipped out of town.

This guy is the sole reason PHX is on the map. His mug should be atop Camelback Mountain.

He had the juevos to take chances.

His franchises have been run with respect. And, they are a model to be learned from for years.

I came to Phoenix 25 years ago, and LOVE the laid back life style.

Perhaps that's a negative factor in sports, though!

Does anyone think it explains why the Suns (almost forever) and the D'backs (for the past two seasons) become too passive (whether it's being out-rebounded or leaving runners in scoring position)?

Let's talk about how management could best enjoy the pace of the desert . . . while implanting the killer instinct necessary to put away opponents?

You've got to be kidding. Laid-back?? Killer instinct??

JC has tried to improve these two franchises by any means possible within the realms of the rules EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

He traded Kidd, Larry Nance (remember where that got us?), Jeff Hornacek, Dan Majerle (are we still complacent?), the Chuckster.

He also went out and gave large amounts of money to baseball players who fit within his field of dreams. The result: Arizona's 1st World Title (that means anything).

Quit baggin on JC. BC867, I don't know what your agenda is regarding JC. But, it's way off base.
