According to Paul Coro....

In an agreement that is expected to be finalized next week, the Suns will finance and run the basketball operations of the D-League franchise while Bakersfield's ownership will continue handling business operations, community relations and other non-basketball functions.

The Suns have shared the Bakersfield Jam as their D-League affiliate for player assignments since 2011 after previously sharing Iowa and Albuquerque with other NBA teams. In recent years, the NBA trend has been to secure a single-affiliation relationship with D-League teams to be able to choose the affiliate's coach and general manager and have continuity in what system is run and how players train.

I think this is definitely a good move, especially with it seeming that Hornacek and McD are more than competent in their jobs and should be around a while. Given that the system most likely will stay close to the same for the next couple of years and having the ability to choose the coach, gm, and system used for the D-League affiliate should make it more likely the team uses the option to send players down for assignment to give them actual playing time, albeit at a less competitive and talent level. With the slew of draft picks the team has the next couple of years plus the likelihood of bringing in some quality free agents taking more playing time away from developing players while training to remain competitive for the postseason, it makes sense. Being able to get the younger players more court time will be something needed but harder to do while competing and being able to send them down to what should be a similar system should make the transition easier if/when they are called up.

We saw how little playing time Len & Goodwin got this year and 6 first round picks over the next 2 years, with 3 first rounders coming this year in a deep draft and 1 second round pick, we should be able to assign players more often and for longer while they get some seasoning. Goodwin was sent down twice for a total of 9 days this year and Len wasn't sent down at all, however with his injuries that made more sense to keep him with the team and trainers. Being able to have people put their more aware of the teams needs and players development should make it possible to send either one of them down next year for extended time if their isn't playing time.

I really liked the D-League idea when it was introduced a few years back and noticed even when the Suns didn't sell their picks and had rookies they didn't send players down often or for very long. They could and should have sent down players like Earl Clark, DJ Strawberry, Gani Lawal, Alando Tucker, Dionte Garrett, Kendall Marshall and Dijon Thompson who clearly weren't ready to be in the rotation but could have benefited from more court time in the D-League. Now that they have their own D-League team maybe they will use it more.

I think its a great idea, too...

Kingdad, I'm impressed by your recall of our deep bench players from years gone by...

I've always been a fan of end of the bench players going back to Negele Knight, Trevor Ruffin, Duane Cooper in the early 90's. I think it was because when I was kid collecting basketball cards those players would be hard to find and when I did get them their per 48 minute stats that were listed made me think they were much better than they were. The wonderful pre-internet days when information wasn't readily available.

This is good, I hope eventually every NBA team has their own D-League team so its more similar to the MLB/AAA system.

They really need to change the D-Leagues name. D-League just sounds awful, like getting a "D" in school. Just call it AAA Basketball or something.

Eventually, I'd hope the Suns are able to move their D-League team to Arizona. I think it's a shame the D"backs moved their AAA affiliate from Tucson to Reno. Though that's somewhat understandable as Tucson has a history of not supporting non UofA teams.

I'd love for the Suns to have a D-League team in Prescott. They already have an arena up there and they have a minor league hockey team that from my understanding is well supported.

I agree with the majority here. The d-league is the best answer to the under-devoloped kids coming out of college. More time on the floor, better coaching, etc. I am hoping for the day when almost every draft pick is expected to earn a spot on the regular roster by putting in his time in the d-league.

This is a step forward for the Suns in regard to player development. However, I would like to learn more on about how the Suns will divide costs and share player personnel with other teams. Who those teams are. Perhaps I missed it.

I wonder if they have plans to move the team to Prescott in the future. They kicked around that idea a while back.

Some place in Arizona would be great, preferably somewhere in the high country. I would likely travel to see them.

That's the kind of guy you are, you like to take the high road. (That is, when you're not on main street.)

Did they? I remember fans/us talking about it, but never anything from the Suns themselves.

With Sarver being the owner I wouldn't be surprised if they put the D-league team in San Diego at some point, even though absolutely no one would attend the games there.

Isn't Prescott a little small? Why not Tucson?

Prescott isn't super small. Their metro area has over 100K and Yavapai county is over 200K. They already have an appropriate sized arena (Tim's Tyota Center in Prescott Valley). Its also an area that has a lot of projected growth. Its about the same size as Sioux Falls which has the Skyforce.

I imagine a lot of folks in PHX would make the trip up to see games (I would), or at least see games while in Prescott for other reasons.

Tucson has an awful history of supporting non UofA teams. Tucson cares about UofA and UofA only. You'll note the Sidewinders and Toros don't exist anymore, Reno and El Paso were deemed better locations.

Even with the Tucson Convention Center arena existing, I can't imagine that town supporting a D-League team when they have UofA hoops.

I could see them going to San Diego, wouldn't surprise me at all. I think they could draw enough people for a D-League team, I know interest wouldn't be great but it would probably be average amongst attendance in the league. If they moved the team to AZ I'd like to see them in Flagstaff, not sure how well they would do there but there was also significant interest around the Card's training camp and didn't the Suns move their training camp up there?

Suns training camp has been there in the past, it seems to constantly be on the move.

Flag wouldn't be bad, but they also have NAU athletics to support which is kind of why I was thinking Prescott. I'd be happy with either though. I think it'd be cool if they eventually made one of those cities their summer home, where they kind of move practices, work outs, their war room, etc. I know if I was the Billionaire owner of the Suns I'd much rather be in Prescott than PHX during the hot offseason.

As an NAU alumnus I can safely say that NAU has no fan support and the Skydome is a wretched facility. Given that they'd have to play their games on campus and NAU makes no effort to get fans to their own games, I cannot really picture them supporting a D-League team.

Prescott would be the better option.
