Suns may not give up pick any time soon

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns are going to have to make a considerable jump in the standings if the Spurs are to acquire their first-round pick this season.
On the night of last summer's draft, the Spurs selected point guard Leandro Barbosa in a prearranged deal, then traded his rights to Phoenix for a future conditional first-round pick. The pick is protected through the 24th selection this season, so the Suns do not have to send it to the Spurs unless they are drafting from Nos. 25-29.

After this year, the pick is protected through No. 20 for the following five seasons. If the Spurs haven't already received the pick, they will get it for the 2010 draft no matter where Phoenix is scheduled to draft.

Rather than possibly wait that long, the Suns have discussed instead sending the Spurs a lottery-protected first-round pick they acquired from Cleveland. If the Spurs agree to the deal, they would receive the pick the first year the Cavaliers qualify for the playoffs.

The Spurs made the deal with Phoenix last summer because they wanted to clear as much salary-cap room as possible to pursue free agents.

Wonder if San Antonio would accept and New York Knicks' protected pick instead.

The only difference between our pick and New York's protected right now seems like New York's is protected one year longer but New York has a safer chance of being good enough to turn the pick to San Antonio.

Unless I am missing something, Clevelands pick will be around 14+, New Yorks pick has a chance to be lottery this year, right?

It seems we would want to keep the New York pick.

New York has a much better chance of making the playoffs than Cleveland does. In fact, I'll be surprised if NY DOESN'T make the playoffs.

In fact, as of today, they occupy the #8 spot in the Eastern Conference.

Yeah that is a bummer..........
Actually I was thinking that the Spurs would not mind waiting a few years for their pick, so waiting for Cleveland would be okay.

Here are the teams as of today that are in the lottery (below). We need to be cheering Phily, Portland, Clippers, Toronto. Boston and Utah to keep winning, so we can get a lottery pick from N.Y.

Not that it's a big deal, sunsfn, but according to CBSSportsline, your standings are off.

1. Indiana -
2. New Jersey 10
3. Detroit 3½
4. Milwaukee 8
5. New Orleans 8
6. Boston 11
7. Toronto 11
8. New York 13

9. Philadelphia 13
10. Miami 15
11. Cleveland 17½
12. Atlanta 19½
13. Washington 19
14. Chicago 20
15. Orlando 20½

Now that I think about it, I thought the lottery was determined by the non-playoff teams. So even though Utah and Seattle have better records, they would be in the lottery and New York would not, since they would be in the playoffs.

I guess it matters where you get them, these came from ESPN today. :)

I was thinking about that as I was putting them on the site, and that part is wrong. One has to look at the league standing to make sure who is in the lottery.

Yes, that is correct. A team is either in the playoffs or in the lottery (unless they've traded their draft pick, of course).

This was not said real clear :(

I meant that I agreed with you chaplin.

A team can not be in the lottery if it is in the playoffs.

This is true, the fact that you are in the playoffs means you are not in the lottery, The lottery is basiclly just for the top 4 posistions, a lottery team may have a pick behind a playoff team if there record is better then a playoff team! did that make sense?

I would rather make a big run, even though we'd miss the playoffs, to gain some team unity, get our young guys used to winning, and give free agents more incentive to want to play here.

Equally important, the Suns need to know if these guys can play. A large number of decisions will be made based on whether players are going to be part of the team future - so playing well makes a big difference. No one plays well if they think they are supposed to lose.

It makes sense but I'm quite sure it's wrong. The teams that do not make the playoffs are seeded in the first thirteen draft positions. (This year 1-3 plus 5-14 because the Bobcats get the 4th slot) These teams are also in the lottery (drawing) for picks 1-3 (the Bobcats are not in the lottery). Teams that make the playoffs are seeded in positions 15 - 30 and do not participate in the lottery.
