22-Year-Old Forward Will Debut in Suns Summer League Workouts on Monday

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Suns have signed forward Zarko Cabarkapa, the 17th pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. Per club policy, specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed but the contract follows the NBA rookie scale for first-round picks whereby the players are under contract for three seasons with a team option for the fourth season. The club retains the right of first refusal for the fifth season.

Cabarkapa (pronounced cha-BAR-kah-pah) is a 22-year old forward from Serbia and Montenegro who played the last two seasons for Buducnost. He was also a member of the gold-medal winning team for Yugoslavia at the 2002 World Championships in Indianapolis and participated for Yugoslavia's Under-20 National Team in the European Under-20 Championships and World University Games.

The 6-11, 235-pounder averaged 11.6 points and 4.8 rebounds in Euroleague play in 2002-03 and added 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and .683 shooting from the field last season in the Yugoslavian League. He joined Buducnost, one of the top clubs in Europe, prior to the 2001-02 season as a 20-year old and averaged 9.4 points and 4.1 rebounds as a reserve.

During the 2000-01 season for Beopetrol he averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in Yugoslavian League action.

Cabarkapa will be one of 14 players participating in the Suns rookie/free-agent camp today before heading to Salt Lake City, Utah to play for Phoenix's summer league entry in the Reebok Rocky Mountain *****. Rookie/free-agent camp begins today at 10 a.m. at the America West Arena practice court.

Finally. I've been wondering what was taking so long. Last year the Suns signed Casey and Amare almost as soon as they could. I figured they would do the same this year.

Even though there wasn't really any contract problems, I'm sure there was some contract issues overseas.

Ok, I forgot about that. Now that you mention it, it seems like Barbosa had some contract issue too.

I think there is just a matter of waiting until Barbosa's Brazillian contract expires(which I believe is on the 16th).

The latest I heard on Barbosa was that he is with his ailing father in brazil.
He is probably not in Phoenix until today so he couldn't sign that contract.
