Why couldn't they have just paid Amare instead of signing 3 worthless veterans?

Interesting. If the Suns want Childress to come in and replace J-Rich or even Barbosa, then this would be yet another cost-cutting move. Doesn't make much sense.

Because he turned down their offer...

I guess Sarver could put him in a headlock and force Amare to sign. But I don't like Robert's chances.

I would love to have Childress here.

Weird, although he did have nice numbers last year in Greece.

But he was also making the equivalent of $15 million in Europe--we're obviously not going to offer that.

This makes sense to me if the Suns trade Barbosa. The Suns need height at SG and Childress would be that person. I think the Suns will keep JRich until the trading deadline to see where the team is going. Then again, who knows what is going on with the rudderless Suns. I understand the Cavaliers are interested in Childress as well. Maybe the Suns are looking to package some other players in a trade.

Report: Josh Childress about to get offer from Washington Wizards

The 'fro may be back.

Two years ago, Josh Childress couldn't get a team to make him a offer, one to compete with what he considered an undersized one from Atlanta. It wasn't because other teams didn't want him -- he may have been the best sixth man in the game -- but those teams knew Atlanta would just match. Why put in the effort for a player you wouldn't get?

So, Childress got an offer from Olympiakos in Greece and took it. Goodbye Atlanta, hello Athens.

Now Childress has found a partner and is negotiation an offer from the Washington Wizards to return to the NBA, according to several outlets in the Greek media (hat tip to the fantastic Sham Sports for finding this one).

No terms of the deal were released, but the guess would be we're talking at least three years and in the $6 million a year range or higher. Atlanta would have the right to match, and if they think Joe Johnson is going to bolt during free agency they likely would.

Childress is bringing back more than just the best 'fro in the game to the states. His game improved in the past year over in Europe, as his off the ball movement and ability to get his points within the team system there really hit home. Back in the NBA the guy who was a force as the sixth man is ready to be a productive as a starter. He is going to be good for someone.

Their offer wasn't as good as NY's offer.

It looks like Sarver wants to spend money and try to win some games now without regard for the future. Given that, I don't understand why they didn't offer Amare the same thing that the Knicks offered.

This little slide show gives 5 possible destinations:

5) Atlanta Hawks
4) New Jersey Nets
3) Clippers
2) Chicago Bulls
1) Washington Wizards

Atlanta probably won't match, but I'll be really surprised if those other teams don't offer a lot more than we will. And he's 6'8", so he'll be more of a SF in our system. We don't play guys that tall at the SG spot.

You can never have too many small forwards!

Frye and Warrick 48M versus 100M for Amare. Sarver is a banker.

In a van...down by the river.
Nice player, I liked Childress when he bolted a few yrs ago but the team keeps getting skinnier. This spells doom for Barbosa. If we get Childress to replace Barbosa i'm ok with that. Better size, almost as quick, active defensively, has shown the ability to make the 3ball.
His stats in the NBA: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3823/career;_ylt=AunaAmny0gZmXrTinlpmoSGkvLYF

Jersey #1 just became available too ;)

Still....where's the beef?........ but i'm all for this if he can still play.

Well, the Hawks' qualifying offer to Childress was $4.8M, so I would imagine that any contract he signs will start at more than that.

He doesn't replace Barbosa. He's a SF, not a SG. Hell, he's taller than Jared Dudley.

I don't get adding multiple role players. The Suns had one of the deepest teams in the NBA last season. What they need is a go to crunch time star.

2 years ago, he turned down a 6 million a year contract to play in Greece, so it might even be more than that. And I can't imagine Sarver offering that much.

If the Suns can sign Childress a trade must be in the works.

Are you implying that Sarver ignores the value of his purchases and is only concerned with the total cost? I'd say 100M for Amare is a much better deal than 50M for the these other two people.

He is listed as a SG. Because a player is tall doesn't mean he isn't a guard.

Suns wouldn't have to worry about Atlanta matching at least since it'd be a S&T. I also think this would signal that LB is gone. Size and natural position aside I think he'd get a lot of PT next to Hill and Dudley.
