Knight moves?: Former Grizzlies guard Brevin Knight wasn't required to pass a physical for the trade with the Suns to become final. Reportedly, Phoenix was trying to move Knight as part of their ongoing quest to cut payroll. But Knight may remain with the Suns.

Moving him to cut salary? That's hardly even possible unless someone offers contracts that can be cut or bought out cheaply or the Jazz take him and future considerations for a second round pick or something.

Or unless someone offers another expiring contract that is for slightly less money. The fudge factor is 15% plus $100,000, so a $5 million contract could be "matched" for about $4.3 million, give or take. That's another $1.4 million saved.

Is there any rule to prevent a team from swapping a player until they get down to a player with a minimum contract?

You know, the Celtics need a point guard. If the Vin Baker comeback appears to be for real, a Knight for Tony Battie swap might be a faint possibility. Battie has three years left, paying him $4.4, $4.8, and $5.2 million. The Suns would save an additional $1.2 million this year, and Battie would fill the spot that they might otherwise have offered the MLE to over the next two years.

Probably not, but they'd have to find a long chain of willing trading partners.

Marcus Banks was impressive in the summer although O'Brien says that it is Tony Delk' position to lose.

I don't think the Celtics would be interessted in having Knight as a starter.

I'd rather keep Knight and use the the MLE next offseason.

Two other remote possibilities:

Jerome James ($4.55 million this year, $4.55 next year, then FA)

Michael Stewart ($4.48 million this year, $4.80 next year, then FA)

I think that James would be worth it and Stewart would not be. SEA has a big question mark at PG. Of course their center rotation is even worse, so they probably can't afford to let James go.

Jahidi White and Nazr Mohammed would work straight up for Knight as well.

But Jahidi makes slightly more and Nazr the same.

Right, I was thinking about options that would also save the Suns some money this season, since that was the initial point of the thread.

They can swap him for picks to a team under the cap like Utah, maybe the Clippers (they are perpetually under the cap, but after this summer, I don't know).

They can swap him for a player with a non-guaranteed contract.

Don't get your hopes up though. We are not going to get a useful player for Brevin Knight.

What you see is what you get.

I do think that they would.

Eric Williams, BOS's 1st rounder for Knight, Jacobsen, 2nd rounder?

And why would we want Eric Williams?

If we wait long enough so Knight can be traded in a multi-player deal I think they would be various option to do something that would also give us a player that can play in the rotation.

That would be a a small salary dump move.
And Eric Williams would be Plan B if Dermarr Johnson wouldn't get a roster spot.

And why couldn't we do the same with Williams?

Plus at least he is not injury prone.

I think that is what is likely will happen. We'll wait until a package can be put together.

We also might end up keeping him until his contract runs out. He would just end up being unwanted bench fodder.

What a wonderful way to build chemistry.

If the team is looking to save money, they're looking for another player in the last year of his contract. It doesn't help the Suns to save $1m this year if they have to pay $4m next year for a non-contributor.

The best match I can see in a salary-reducing trade is Travis Knight of the Knicks. T. Knight makes $4.4m, so the Suns would save $1.2m with the luxury tax.

For the Knicks, Brevin Knight might give them enough point guards to buy out Charlie Ward's contract, which would save them a lot of money--$7m?

Anyway, that's the kind of deal I think the Suns are looking for right now.

The sad thing is that the Suns could really use Travis Knight right now.

Another deal proposal with NYK:

Knight, Jacobsen, 3 mil. cash for Ward, 2nd round pick.

Why for NYK?

As a player Knight has a similar value as Ward has.
With Houston's injury and because of their lack of backcourt-depth Jacobsen can be a valuable contibutor. The 3 mil. cash would reduce their losses which tis deal caused.

Why for PHO?

They save about 5 mil. with this deal this year because of Ward's buy-out and more than .6 mil. next year because of Jacobsen's moving. They get a 2nd rounder.

I'd want to get a good look at DerMarr and also take a long look at C-Jakes improvement over the off season before I do this deal.

If DerMarr looks like he's back, this trade makes sense.

BTW, did you know that the Suns have 7 lottery picks on their roster? Not bad considering they've only missed the playoffs once since 1987.

Steph, Shawn, Amare, Penny, Googs, DerMarr, and JJ

Dunno--by the time the Suns can trade Knight in a multi-player deal, wouldn't it be too late to buy out Ward's contract?
