Dec 27, 2011 - According to a report by Wendell Maxy of Beyond the Beat, 6-6 swingman free agent Gilbert Brown is in Phoenix and will work out with the Suns. Brown, 24, was in training camp with the Boston Celtics as an undrafted free agent before being cut.
Brown played five years with the Pitt Panthers and averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 rebonds and 2.7 assists while shooting 45.8 percent from the field his senior year.

For those not familiar with Brown, the 6-foot-6 guard/small forward out of Pitt started his pro career with S. Oliver Wurzburg in Germany's Beko BBL before parting ways with the team in November. Brown and the team mutually decided to dissolve his one-year contract, leaving him a free-agent.

The Phoenix Suns haven't yet responded to a request for confirmation and Brown's agent declined to confirm or deny the report today.
Brown seems to think he was impressive when he worked out for the Suns before the draft.
"Hands down, I was the best player at every workout I had," Brown told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in June. "The one workout in Phoenix had Jordan Hamilton (selected 26th by the Mavericks) and Klay Thompson (selected 11th by the Warriors). I hit all of my shots, and no one could score on me. It was one of the best displays of my ability. A lot of people only had me as a defender and an athlete coming into the draft, but at these workouts I was able to show that I could do a lot more than what I did at Pitt. I showed I was able to score the basketball, and I was able to show them that I was an even better defender than what I showed in college."
It's not readily apparent why the Suns would need to add depth at shooting guard.

Just to play the game, what if another team had an interest in Warrick. He seemed to play well at SF. Did Toronto ever fill their need at SF, the job Pietrus was supposed to fill. I'm sure teams are standing in line for Childress as well.

I think Pietrus would be a more immediate fix for the Celtics as he apparently has decided this is the team he wants to play for. Pietrus can help a team if he wants to put out the effort.

As I think about it more, he is probably a 10 day contract player if that still exists under the new CBA.

Looks to me like a player that caught their interest in draft workouts and now he is available again and they are taking a second look.

A really optimistic fan would say that they worked out a deal with Ainge and the players. "we'll cut Pietrius if you cut Brown" kind of thing.

At least its a young player and not some recycled vet.

The kid does have talent from watching the clips. He has speed, very long and athletic. His shot from the outside is a little quirky. He starts his shooting motion from behind his head. At least its a high release. If he consistent with it, it should be ok, but it won't allow a really quick catch and shoot. Haven't checked his shooting percentages. Seems to be a pretty active defender.
