Is everything
Wow, there are almost 400 posts already in the recent Batman thread. Why are folks so overwhelmingly into re-tread superhero films? It seems like a rather odd and relatively new phenomenon in the history of movie making. Is it the comfort of knowing the characters somewhat and their "history", or is it something else? Is it just a "guy" thing? I realize this is a broad question but don't really get into these movies much so please enlighten me, what is the appeal?

I enjoy super hero films personally...well for the most part, I didn't like the previous version of Fantastic 4 and didn't even see the new version. I think visual effects are now to a point where they can do a superhero film justice like never before and the movies no longer have to be campy--they appeal to broader audiences.

Exactly what I was going to say - special effects have made better superhero films possible. That and you have a large audience of people - with disposable income - who grew up reading comics.

What's the appeal? Billions of dollars in box office. At least for reasons for green lighting. You can thank Tim Burton's Batman for all of this. How ironic that a DC property led to this renaissance in big budget moviemaking.

I don't see it as retread. Most of these have never been done on this scale or the stories never told on the big screen. It's the same reason people flock to movies made from books. People like to see these things realized visually. Most previous attempts either on TV of film have been "B" movie attempts with no real quality put into them.

Technology has finally caught up with what was depicted in comic books. Many characters never had a chance on the big screen because they were just to strange or hard to realize on film. That to me is probably the number one reason. We are in a renascence of sorts with hero movies. Finally what was imagined on ink can be done with good quality on the big screen. Finally, Hollywood is throwing 1st rate actors, directors and writers at these movies.

I am going to enjoy the ride while it lasts. People are going to get burned out sooner or later. Probably sooner with all the saturation on TV and the big screen.
