He reached big time on defensive lineman; many were busts.
However he seemed almost brilliant on picking offense players; lots became all pro's.
Bottom line looking at the 10 year period (Denny's tenure); he would get IMO a very favorable rating.
The coach/gm that has never made a bad draft pick most likely is in his first draft.
Dude you misunderstood my post.
DG did great in the draft some of those later round reaches like B JOHNSON and BIRK became pro-bowlers. JK was an early round reach. Some dude he drafted in the 7th round was still playing in the NFL.
And you are being way to hard on DG's draft picks on DL and defense in general. Defensive wise he made some great picks. Fisk, G Brown, O Thomas def. rookie of the year, Washington, E McDaniel (probowler), Wong, Ty Carter. These guys were NOT busts they were solid NFL players for a long time.
Underwood and Boireau developed illnesses so they don't count against him. Howard got hurt.
He wanted to draft Sapp but wasn't allowed to as a second choice Alexander was a good player. He also wanted McAllister Kearse Smoot but for various reasons he could not take them. DG knew defense and did very very well. It's just that his offensive picks were so insanely good that his defensive picks get underrated.
