I'll admit that I'm surprised. I thought all of Riley's protestations about how he was sick of coaching and really didn't want to do it anymore were pretty convincing. Guess he fooled me.

Last year they kept rumoring Riley would force SVG out because he really wanted to coach again. Last I remember Riley admitted he DID want to coach again, but said SVG was doing too good a job to replace him. Now, I wonder when the "interim" label will be taken off Riley. I wonder if they will let him do front office AND coach. I know Jerry C. did it years ago, however I don't know if leagues rules have changed since then so it would preclude Riley from holding two positions like that?

I thought he said something like, "I don't want to coach again, and even if I did, Stan is doing too good a job." But my memory could be wrong.

I thought the issue was someone trying to coach the team while also being a part owner. Didn't McHale hold both the coaching and GM positions last season?

Check out this little doozy from http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/ESPNSports/story?id=942551

Quote:
Ramsay said he spoke with Riley during the NBA playoffs, and Riley indicated that he missed the rush of coaching. Although Shaquille O'Neal reportedly was unhappy at not getting the ball in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Pistons, there has been no sign that Heat players have pushed for Van Gundy's ouster; in fact, according to the Herald, several players have privately expressed that Van Gundy remain coach.

I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but let me put it out there, why did Shaq not want anybody to see him on crutches?

Did Shaq milk his sprained ankle?

Food for thought.

Riley had this plan going for months and months. SVG got stabbed in the back in this one. Sure he quit for "personal reasons", personally I wouldn't like Riley breathing down my neck with speculations abound that he wants to coach again.

Is it coincidence that Shaq returns and Riley takes over. I don't think so.

its suspect thats for sure. Van Gundy has done a tremendous job, its a shame he is being ousted... and I believe Riley pressued him into doing that.. and Shaq too.

It could also be Van Gundy saying "This is getting to be too much. I'm done." And Riley saying "Hold off until Shaq gets back."

Riley said himself that Van Gundy has been talking about quitting since opening day.
