As I was shaving this morning I was listening to Ron Wolfley on KTAR wax stupidly poetic on how--if Dirk were to be injured and the Suns win a championship--the championship would be tainted.

I am interested in your thoughts. Personally, I think its an asinine statement. I'll give my reasons in a later post.

The Heat championship was tainted when Amare got injured. Should have an astrix and be put in italics. :sarcasm:

1st spurs championship in the lockout half season.. maybe not tainted, but definitly not the same as a full season..

That's about the only one in the NBA, but I still don't consider it tainted.

Maybe the 1919 World Series is about the only championship that I could consider tainted.

I completely disagree. The playoffs were still full length, and the Spurs still had to play opponents who were just as strong as they would have been in a normal season.

I agree with you. Why would it be the Suns' fault if Dirk was injured? They would still have to go through the best teams in the league to win the championship. I think it's ignorant to say a championship is tainted. Does the best team always win? No. But that doesn't mean it's tainted. There's a reason why you play the games and the team that comes out on top comes out on top it's not tainted.

Ron Wolfley is an ex-NFL player, why would you put any stock into his opinions on the NBA?

Injuries are part of the game. If injury issues make for "tainted championships" EVERY championship is tainted.

Was the Celtics (or was it Pistons) championship tainted when Magic went down with a hammy--or the Laker's when Isiah went down.

How about the year the Suns lost Danny Manning? What about the two Rockets titles when Michael decided to baseball?

Even last year--Amare was out after having dominated the Mavs the year before. (Wolfley explained this one. He said that since Amare was out the whole year, it didn't count).

The only thing that can "taint" a championship is cheating--clear, blatant cheating--not the piddly stuff that always goes on in basketball.

What amazed me was that most of the callers AGREED with the would be "Jockstrap Philosopher."

if dirk got hurt in the playoffs, i doubt the mavs would make it out of the 2nd round. I can only see dallas winning in the first round without dirk. The suns will have to defeat the spurs, a team that didn't have success against in the past. let's not forget either that the east has won 2 out of the last 3 titles......despite the WC being superior as a whole. Detroit also took SA to 7 games in 05 (something the suns couldn't do). So if the suns win a title there will be no taint. You will just hear mavs fans making the same comments as some suns fans have made about the what ifs.

Ron Wofley... that is why he is so popular... :sarcasm: In all seriousness, I think he is mentally challenged. One too many hits, maybe?

Then the Heat's championship was tainted last year when we lacked Stoudemire, because we should have been playing them in the finals. And the Spurs championship was tainted because Joe Johnson was playing with a broken face.

Dont care for that ******** talk.

No such thing as a tainted championship. Things happen every year at the end of the regular season or in the playoffs that change the course of events away from what the experts think "should" happen.

What if the Suns never get to play Dallas in the WCF because the Mavs get upset in the second round by Houston? Would that also taint a Suns WCF victory? No, because that's the way it plays out. That's why they play the games. Sometimes the best team doesn't win, and sometimes there are injuries. It's all part of the game.

Injuries are a part of sports... I don't see how this guy could possibily make this statement with a straight face.

Then again when the Mavericks beat the Suns in the WCF last year my idiotic Suns fans friends were crying it wasn't legit because of all their injuries, so what if the Mavs won the championship? I'm sure those same kind of fans would find a way to call it tainted and that is the definition of irony.

the guy makes that comment because he has NO IDEA ABOUT ANYTHING AS FAR AS CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE CONCERNED. I mean come on - the guy is a former Arizona Cardinal that pimps them at every turn - of course he's got no clue as to what he's talking about.

as far as last year - seriously - only unbelievable homers could have called a Mavs title last year tainted due to injuries to the Suns. When you've never won anything (which sadly our boys haven't), you've got no room to say you were the team Dallas needed to beat in order to get their due - they did that in beating the Spurs (defending champs), but then just choked something awful in the Finals.

The only time I really thought a Finals victory was somewhat tainted was the Pistons first title - they were going up against a Lakers team that literally SWEPT the entire Western Conference in the playoffs (including us :( ) and then lost Magic and Byron Scott in the Finals. Something about beating David Rivers and Tony Smith had to leave somewhat of a bad taste in Pistons' fans mouths, although I'm sure that got completely washed away when they kicked the crap out of the Blazers the next year.
