CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina players Sean May, Raymond Felton and Marvin Williams are entering the NBA draft, leaving the NCAA champion Tar Heels without their top seven scorers for next season.

``I've coached a lot of great players and these three here are at the top of the list,'' coach Roy Williams said during a news conference Friday on the floor at Dean Smith Center.

Junior guard Rashad McCants already decided to leave early and Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin Scott completed their eligibility.

North Carolina now has only one player on its roster who started a game last season -- point guard Quentin Thomas, who replaced the suspended Felton in the opener.

Felton, May and McCants were part of a heralded class recruited by former coach Matt Doherty. But the team sputtered during their freshman year and Doherty resigned under pressure.

In their second season under Roy Williams, who left Kansas to coach his alma mater, the Tar Heels won the NCAA crown, beating Illinois 75-72.

``It's been a lot of tough times, and it's been a lot of great times, especially winning the national championship this year,'' Felton said.

May addressed the coach, who joined his players for their group announcement.

``I really didn't know the talent I had and when you came here, you brought that out,'' May said.

May had said immediately after the season that he would be back, but the burly, 6-foot-9 center backed off in recent days. He was magnificent during the NCAA tournament, averaging 22.3 points and 10.7 rebounds while shooting 67 percent.

Williams said May's decision made sense considering he was voted the outstanding player at the Final Four.

``I don't think he's a cow or a piece of beef or anything, but his stock is pretty high,'' Williams said.

Felton, a 6-1 point guard, averaged 13 points and shot 44 percent on 3-pointers, up from 34 percent the previous two years. Marvin Williams averaged 11 points while never starting a game in his only season in Chapel Hill, but the 6-9 forward likely would have been a lottery pick had he entered the NBA right out of high school.

Roy Williams has one of the best recruiting classes coming to campus, and he'll need as many top players as he can get. Forward David Noel, mostly a reserve during his career, is the leading returning scorer with an average of 3.9 points. Noel and Thomas are the only players from the regular rotation coming back.

Illinois' Williams to enter NBA draft

Expected, but I wish he would've stayed.

By JIM PAUL, Associated Press Writer
April 19, 2005
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Junior guard Deron Williams will skip his senior season at Illinois and enter the NBA draft.

Williams said Tuesday night that he has signed with an agent, which prevents him from returning to the Illini next season.

``It has been my lifelong dream to play in the NBA,'' Williams said. ``I felt this was an opportunity I could not pass up.''

The 6-foot-3 Williams, a third-team AP All-America known for his playmaking and defensive abilities, averaged 12.5 points per game this season as the Illini reached the national championship game, but he led the team with 264 assists, an average of almost seven per game. He was selected first-team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season.

Against Arizona in the Chicago Regional final, Williams sparked Illinois' remarkable comeback from a 15-point deficit over the final 4 minutes of regulation. His 3-pointer sent the game into overtime and he hit two more, helping Illinois reach the Final Four with a 90-89 win.

The Illini were undefeated until their final game of the regular season and went into the NCAA tournament with a 37-1 record.

In their 72-57 national semifinal against Louisville, Williams held Cardinals guard Francisco Garcia to just four points, well off his 16-point average. The Illini lost the championship game 75-70 to North Carolina.

Illini coach Bruce Weber said feedback from NBA draft advisers indicated Williams has ``a very strong chance to be a top 10 pick.''

Williams said that was enough to persuade him to retain an agent, and he signed with Bob McClaren of Houston over the weekend.

``Once you sign with an agent, it's over, there's no coming back,'' Williams said. ``I definitely wanted to be sure I was in the best position I could be and I found that out so I just decided to sign.''

Williams said he plans to finish the semester at Illinois before moving to Houston in late May to work out in the final weeks before the draft.

Weber said Williams will be about 20 hours shy of getting his degree in sports management.

This makes Arizona's game next year in the Dean Dome much more winnable.

It does - no matter how good UNC's class is next year, to lose the top 7 at once like that will be hard to fill.

Jon - Is Dee Brown declaring?[/QUOTE]

I don't think so, at least the last I had heard - Dee's game is not NBA level, IMHO. Illinois will have a tough year next season with the graduation losses, and no Deron.

Dee Brown's declaring but not signing with an agent. If he was smart he'd come back and prove to scouts that he can run the point full time.

And in other news, Chris Rodgers from Arizona is somehow also declaring and again not signing with an agent. This idiotic move (if he hires an agent) is kind of like Rob Evans making himself available for the Lakers head coach vacancy.

Hey Mao do you know if Hassan Adams has declared or not? I keep hearing conflicting stories, he declared, he didn't, I think everyone is just guessing.

Rodgers is clearly a stunner but hopefully he's smart enough that he won't get an agent.

Just never know, IIRC ARiza did the same thing last year and even after being told 2nd round or undrafted he stayed in the draft, and after he got picked in round 2, hired an agent. He DID make the Knicks but still it surprised me until I learned of his academic issues.

Hassan hasn't dropped his classes or been seen driving a German car and usually those are the first two signs of an early departure, so I'd be shocked if Hassan wasn't in an Arizona uniform next season.

There's a big difference between Ariza and Rodger. Ariza's a 6'8 athletic and physical freak and we all know guys like that are few and far between. 6'3 PGs who can't shoot or run and offense are a dime a dozen these days and that's exactly what Rodgers is. If Rodgers has half a brain (a debatable question), he'll pull a Salim and rededicate himself under the wacth of the coaching staff.

Other than those guys, I'm interested in seeing what Chris Hernandez does. Assuming Martell Webster goes pro, if Hernandez comes back Stanford IMO should be the favorite to win the Pac-10 with Arizona and UCLA following. He goes pro and the conference is wide open betwen the three aforementioned teams with perhaps Washington and Cal making some noise.

Agreed, I think Adams, Hernandez and Webster are the keys to the whole conference. If adams is staying UA is solid. Webster says if he's in the lottery he's gone, which likely means he's gone, so hernandez is the only question mark.

I actually happen to have the same surgeon he does (my knees his back and foot) and from what he told me before I wouldn't be surprised if he goes pro now. His foot is about as good as it's going to get, the back is the problem it's chronic and probably degenerative so he's got a limited window to make NBA money before that back forces him to retire. He says he's having fun at Stanford but would go pro depending on where he's going in the draft(right now 2nd round.)

I think ultimately he'll stay but he may just decide I can play X years before my back is shot I'd be smarter spending 1 extra year in the NBA. I wouldn't be stunned to see him file for the draft, go in the 2nd round to the Warriors (monty) and make the team, Montgomery loves him, might do it as a favor.
