Arthur Hiller directed this satiric look at contemporary urban high schools, examining disillusioned teachers who try to regain their idealism. Nick Nolte stars as Alex, a teacher at John Fitzgerald Kennedy High School, who was once an idealistic teacher but whose main concern now is sobering up before the next class session. The high school is headed by ineffective principal Mr. Horn (William Schallert) and an imperious vice-principal named Roger (Judd Hirsch). When a recent graduate of the high school sues the school because it graduated him illiterate, Alex finds himself in conflict with the hard-nosed school superintendent Dr. Burke (Lee Grant). I recently watched it. Man, Morgan Freeman was old 30 years ago. What a haircut he has in this. Strange movie. I guess it would be classified as a dark comedy, but it wasn't really that funny.

I didn't realize Morgan Freeman was in it. About all I really remember from this movie is Jo Beth Williams stripping and running naked through the school hallway.

That's one great thing about early 80's movies, you can always count on at least one scene of random nudity.

Yeah, I think that took a turn for the worse because people kept referring to it as gratuitous or unnecessary. Quality nude shots are never gratuitous. I mean, did they all of a sudden forget that guys watch movies?

I think they should bring back random nudity with a vengeance. I just have one request if they do it, put something it the ratings descriptions that indicates the gender that generated the nudity rating. There's nothing worse than wasting 2 hours on a Mila Kunis movie in part because nudity is listed in the description only to discover the nude scene consists of a butt shot of some guy walking through moonbeams.

I so remember that scene and was thinking back then " where are her boobs?"

This was a great and underrated movie. And, yes, Jo Beth is lacking in the boob area but at the time she was a very attractive woman. Now Laura Dern, she was a cutie then.

I remember liking it the first time I saw it, but that was in the theaters in 1984. I'll have to put this on my rewatch list.
