Just so I know, in yesterday's paper they listed each team's salary and TB was listed under $20,000,000 for the entire team. I guess this is right but the next highest to them was over $40,000,000. That is a huge dropoff if it is accurate. This may be a rhetorical question but how can they expect to win games if they don't spend some money?

The simple answer is: "They can't" :D

The more complicated answeris that TBY is basically going in a complete rebuilding stage right now. They are throwing all of their rookie talent out there (who are set to make less than $500,000 per) and filling in holes with very, very replacable veterans who they don't have to pay squat either. If you're really in a rebuilding stage though, you want as much freedom and manuverability as you can get and you don't want to waste the money you have on the Chuck Knoblauch type guys (thanks KC)

But are they being fair to both the fans, and the other teams in the league, especially non AL East teams?

I mean this is an almost guaranteed W's for the Yanks, etc.

And with that type of team in the AL, I sure as heck wouldn't want Home Field advantage in the World Series based on best record.

You mean kinda like any series against MIL (56-106) last year? Even with a $50M payroll they managed 1 more win than the DRays.

In order to rebuild something, didn't something have to be built in the first place?

I don't want to trot out the old "what is wrong with baseball" statement but I fail to see how this development can be remotely good for baseball...although I wish the Dbacks would get the Rays alot this year :D

It seemed to me when I looked at top prospect lists, like Baseball America, that the Deviil Rays have some decent prospects to work with. In the long run that has to be better than signing players at inflated prices.

Can't argue that however doesn't the organization need to place at least a respectable (not necessarily a winning product) product on the field so when those prospects pan out (hopefully) then there is actually a fan base? I know all about Montreal and that is an entirely different situation.

Or do the owners naturally assume once they start winning the people will show up even after having to watch this current team?

I am not suggesting they just pay outrageous salaries just for the sake of doing so. But $19,000,000 in an era where individual players are making almost that amount in some cases?
