Bears | Washington To Be Cut? - from www.KFFL.com
Fri, 27 Jun 2003 18:24:34 -0700

Updating a previous report, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Chicago Bears DT Ted Washington could become a salary cap casualty later this summer.

Put him right next to Bryant!

This would be a great fit with the team

If we wanted Washington, why not give up a 6th for Hand? My guess is the Cards would stay put if Big Ted hits the market.

Hand is not even close to Ted Washington.

Washington is a former Pro Bowler...

Check-out the BEARS stats against the run last year!!!

I don't understand this sort of thinking. The only two teams that gave up more on the ground than we did last year were Seattle and New England. Are we supposed to think we can't do better than Tanner and Davis? Not to mention, anyone we can pick up after a release can be let go at the end of camp with no cap hit.

In addition to Washington, Grady Jackson will possibly be released as well. I know people are going to rip on him also, as if Tanner and Davis are better. But, NO had better rush defense stats. And, Jackson had 4.5sacks and 3 FR's last year. That would've led our defensive line easily last season. DT is the one position that we can realistically still upgrade before training camp with a free agent signing. Along with backup QB that is!

Yes he was. In week one.

The Bears run defense relies heavily on Washington. Some might think I'm crazy, but I think the most important player on the 13-3 Bears was Washington. He was inmovable, a one man defensive line almost. Without him, Brian Urlacher couldn't keep guards off of him.

To be honest, Grady Jackson isn't better than either Tanner, Bell, or Bryant IMO, but I could see him coming in and being a body.

I would prefer Washington, since he has had moments in his career where he was a bigtime force against the run.

Grady Jackson played at a dominant level the year before last when he was with the Raiders. But, I agree, I'd pick Washington first. Both guys have done FAR more on the field than either Tanner or Davis.

Another guy who might be released is Lional Dalton from Denver. I think he might be worth a looksee as well.

If we could get this guy for say, a million or so for a one year contract, would it not be worth it to bring him in? at least for depth and veteran leadership?

the cards should be on this guy like white on rice if he becomes available.

But the problem with Jackson, is that while he got some sacks with the Raiders, he was a terrible run defender. I don't want us to bring in any players that are bad run defenders, we already have enough of those :D.

Lional Dalton is an interesting prospect, but again I have to wonder how much of the interest in him was overhype. But bring him in, give him a chance if released.

Big Ted is 35 years old and 365 lbs. A $ million might be OK, but at that size and age, it would not surprise me to see injury problems.
Another possible cap causality Big Daddy Wilkinson from Washington. He's 5 years younger than Big Ted and maybe 10 lbs lighter!

Big Daddy would be a nice addition, but WASH isn't going to release him. I'd have Big Ted come in for an audition and see how he looks, if it goes well make him a tender.

Give Washington a physical and if he passes sign him. He is a definite upgrade over Davis and Tanner.

I am concerned about Bryant panning out. He is still a question mark. His lack of any noticeable splash last season is kind of bothering even with missing training camp. And we already know what Davis and Tanner can do. Should definitely try to get Washington. We know what we can get from him even with some diminished capabilities at 35.

Washington can't possibly be seen as a a stand-in for Bryant.

They are two diffferent types of D-linemen, and we (the CARDS) certainly have higher expectation from Bryant, than simply "stuffing the run". Pressure, hurries, sacks... is my hope when thinking of Bryant's upcoming season.

I'm certainly no expert on the market value of 35 year, 365Lb., former All-pros... But, if he still has something left in the tank, they're plently of teams, expected to contend, who have the CAP room to offer 1-million. One could add, some of them don't include burning in the sun, as part of the work environment.

Heck, if the Cardinals sign Washington, why not go after Gilbert Brown too?

Imagine 700+ pounds of beef manning the middle of the line of scrimmage...

Perhaps this would solve our difficulty stopping the run...
