The Coyotes have reached agreements with goaltender Mikael Tellqvist and center Mike Zigomanis on two-year contracts, an NHL source told The Republic on Thursday.

Tellqvist has posted a 9-7-2 record, a 3.29 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage in 18 games since coming to Phoenix in a trade with Toronto on Nov. 28.

The 27-year-old Swede could become the team's No. 1 goalie next season, especially if Curtis Joseph does not re-sign.

Zigomanis quietly has had a solid season for Phoenix, which signed him as a free agent last summer.

Zigomanis, 26, entered Thursday's game with 10 goals and six assists in 51 games.

In 59 NHL games before this season, Zigomanis notched three goals and four assists.

Tellqvist will be paid $800,000 per season, and Zigomanis will be paid $625,000 per season.
'Jovo' sidelined

Defenseman Ed Jovanovski did not play Thursday.

Jovanovski injured his left elbow vs. Tampa Bay on Tuesday, but his nagging groin injury might sideline him indefinitely.

"I'm not too sure what we're going to do with him," coach Wayne Gretzky said. "He's got an injury that's not getting any better, and we've got to take care of that and make sure it gets better."

Jovanovski leads Phoenix defensemen with 29 points.

JR on possible trade

With the Coyotes fading from playoff contention, other teams keep calling regarding possible trades.

Many calls are inquiries about players with significant playoff experience.

A quick scan of the roster reveals just a few of those, including Jeremy Roenick, 37.

Roenick said he hasn't given up on the Coyotes making the playoffs this season, but if it becomes clear they won't make it and another team in better playoff position comes calling for him, he'd be OK with a trade.

"Absolutely, 100 percent," Roenick said. "I'm on a one-year deal, anyway. . . . I'd definitely be up for a (Stanley) Cup run."

Roenick, an 18-year NHL veteran, has not won the Cup.

Fischer placed on IR

Center Patrick Fischer underwent surgery on an abdominal muscle Wednesday and was placed on the injured reserve list.

The Coyotes hope he can return in six weeks, but the more likely scenario is he will miss the rest of the season.

Fischer has notched four goals and six assists in his first NHL season.

Ugh, if Tellqvist becomes the #1 goalie next year I think I might gouge out my eyeballs. He preformed well when he came over in the trade but since then has really dropped off.

Also, if we can get a bag of sawdust for JR, I would do that trade in a second.

I wonder if Jovo can be traded for anything? His contract might hinder his return value and he has been alright this season but dumping that contract would be nice.

Tellqvist is only getting $800k a year which is most certainly back up money. At that price you just can't lose, and if he plays like he did earlier in the season then its an absolute steal. Zigomanis was a great hidden find by management and has been one of our best forwards. He's great on the fourth line in a defensive role as well as a penalty killer, plus contributing a little on offense as well. Both are great deals for the Coyotes.
