No. 4 seed Tennessee (26-6) advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals after defeating No. 13 seed Texas (19-15), 83-72, on Friday. The 2025 SEC Tournament is being contested at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Vols will face former Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl and No. 1 seed Auburn on Saturday. The Tennessee-Auburn winner will advance to the SEC Tournament championship game on Sunday.
Four players scored 10-plus points for Tennessee against the Longhorns on Friday.
Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier led all scorers with 23 points. He converted 9-of-15 field goal attempts, 2-of-5 three-point attempts and 3-of-6 free throw attempts. Lanier also totaled one rebound, one assist and one steal in 33 minutes.
Zakai Zeigler (19), Jahmai Mashack (13) and Igor Milicic Jr. (12) also scored 10-plus points for the Vols.
Tennessee never trailed the Longhorns during the matchup. The game was tied for two minutes, 49 seconds.
Friday's win marked the second victory for the Vols against Texas during the 2024-25 basketball season. Tennessee defeated Texas, 74-70, on Jan. 11.
Tennessee leads the all time men's basketball series against Texas, 7-4, dating to Dec. 18, 1952. Rick Barnes is 4-1 against the Longhorns as Tennessee's head coach.
