The 2025 NFL draft will be held, Thursday-Saturday, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Prior to the 90th NFL draft in league history, Vols Wire looks at historical Tennessee players selected. This installment looks back at former Tennessee inside linebacker Jerod Mayo. He is the highest drafted Tennessee linebacker in NFL history.
Mayo was selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft (No. 10 overall) by New England. He played for the Patriots from 2008-15.
During his professional career, he was a Super Bowl champion following the 2013 season. Mayo was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008 when he also earned PFWA All-Rookie Team honors. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2010 and 2012, and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2010 as he led the NFL in tackles. The former Vol totaled 802 career tackles, 11 sacks, 19 pass deflections, eight forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
Mayo later served as an inside linebackers coach in New England from 2019-23 under head coach Bill Belichick. He was the Patriots' head coach in 2024.
Mayo played for the Vols from 2004-07 under head coach Phillip Fulmer, and was a First-Team All-SEC selection in 2007.
