in line with the Eric Swann thread, how about the player responsible for making me a Cards fan in the mid-70's.

Any of you folks remember that incredible Monday Night Game he had? I don't remember the exact date, but I remember he scored all night. I specifically remember he had a spectacular punt return for a TD. And I think a Kickoff also.

Anyone remember this game?

Definately Metcalf. What a potent offense. Jim Ottis, Terry Metcalf, Mel Gray, Jim Hart, Dan Dierdorf, Conrad Dobler. All probowlers.

My memory says he ran a KO back for a TD, it was called back by penalty, not long after he ran a punt back for a TD that counted?

Favorite player of all time, he was a barely sub 4.6 forty guy by the way but he could change directions at full speed, great hands, most exciting player i've ever seen.

Metcalf was the most elusive Cardinal in history. Once he was in the open field, you could forget about taking him down. As much as I loved watching this guy, he coughed up the ball on a REGULAR basis. If you could put a shoulder on him, he'd fumble. That being said, he was still an important part of that Cardinal era

Has anyone seen much footage of the mid seventies era Big Red on NFL network? I don't watch all the time, but all I've seen is the '98 Cardinals season highlights. (Ran that one after the Tillman memorial on Monday night) And they also show, say, highlights of running backs torching various teams, including the Cardinals. I see a lot of Cardinals torching it seems and not a lot of Cardinal highlights. I'd love to see more vintage football games to see how the games have changed, and not changed.

I would love to see Card games from the 70s and 80s again. I am surprised the NFL has missed this marketing opportunity but it seems every team has games from the past that fans would be interested in seeing again. Maybe not even whole games but condense it like ESPN does when it does a classic game.

The NFL Network did show the '74 & '82 "team huddle" season reviews in
late November. About half of the '74 team highlights were of Metcalf.
He was a special player, that left because of money to the CFL.

I have a nice collection of games from the late 70's early 80's - like Roy Green's debut against Dallas when he intercepted a pass and caught an unbelievable diving rolling TD from Jim Hart while managing to escape collision with the goal post and the referee. That was a 20-17 win and a great game. Others with Lomax, OJ and Green against Redskins and Cowboys, win over 49ers a SDS (again Lomax to Green) and yes even some vintage footage from older games including Metcalf and Sonny Randle, Greens 106 yard KO return against Boys - all that makes me want to dig them out and spend the weekend reminiscing.

Trouble is they are all on Betamax that wonderful invention which brought us entertainment when we wanted it and was displaced by a cheaper poorer quality alternative. The other problem is my $1500 Sony Professional Betamax is broke and would cost more money than I have at present to fix, if we can still find the parts.

Anyone still have a working BM unit who would be willing to transcribe some of these gems to VHS that we could circulate among those interested?

Redmark,

You should try going to your local public television station and seeing if the tv guys there are willing to convert them for you. I am sure with a decent donation to public television you could support quality educational programming and get those tapes converted. Worth a shot. My mother used to work at a PBS station and I got to hang out in the control room, the guys who record all the satellite feeds and all that stuff were all easy going individuals. The key is to avoid administrative or authority types and head stright to the control room upon entering the station. It will be like a fun adventure where the prize is vintage Cards games in new format.

It's got to be less than $1500.

In the not too distant future I plan on getting this to attach to my comp and along with directv, should let me digitally record all the Cardinals games for archival. I just need to find out if the blackout rule applies to Sunday Ticket.

I have a betamax circa 1984 which I think still works. How many tapes we talkin' about? Being tecnologically challenged I would need my son's help in transcribing but if there really is interest I'll see if my beta works and we can go from there.

Me too. My uncle in AZ. told me that he took 50 betamax to a local company, and had them switched to VHS for $100. There's probably a place where you're at that can get this done.

Great picks! For Punt Returner, how about Via Sikahema?

Waitaminute...Chuck Latourette was a punter, not a punt returner. He was a great punter though.

And for kickers, Jim Bakken's gotta be the guy...

As I recall Bob Young was a guard. Tom Banks was Cards best center. Aslo a good TE was JV Cain. A pity he died so young. Other good WRs were Pat Tilley, Ike Harris and JT Smith.

Jim Otis was their best FB.

Yup. Bob Young and Conrad Dobler were the guards. Young was considered one of the strontest men in the world at one time. Tom Banks was the center and Deirdorf was the All-Pro tackle. Can't remember who the other tackle was. One season this offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the NFL, a record for the day, I believe.

Thanks for the offers: I'll dig out the tapes and post a list on another thread by this evening - off hand I'd say there are about a dozen. Most are complete games. A few years ago someone prepared an anthology of old games from weekly highlight packages (some are so old they're in B/W).
Those are the ones with the Metcalf highlights.

Once I get the list posted and determine a cost per copy, people can order which ones they want. I'm in Long Beach- L.A. area so it shouldn't be hard to find a company to convert them in some sort of efficient process. Then I can mail each set to those who are interested. This will be great for me and a great way to get through the dog days of summer waiting for the season to start.

Roger Finnie was the other tackle. That year they allowed 8 sacks which has been tied by the Hogs of Washington under Coryell and Hanifan protege Gibbs. They allowed 8 sacks but 2 were by running backs who missed blocking assignments.

I would be interested in buying old game tapes.
