Another day, another mock draft featuring the Houston Texans finding their next franchise left tackle at No. 25.
After trading away the five-time Pro Bowl left tackle to the Washington Commanders for multiple draft picks, Houston must find stability on the left side of the line. Tytus Howard could start to get the year, but the expectation is for him to shift inside to guard permanently for the latter half of his career.
The move could happen in Week 1 if the Texans land the right left tackle prospect. According to NFL.com's Bucky Brooks, that player is Ohio State's Josh Simmons, a potential top-10 talent who falls into Houston's lap at pick No. 25.
"After signing veteran offensive tackles Cam Robinson and Trent Brown to one-year deals following the Laremy Tunsil trade, the Texans could invest in more of a long-term strategy by adding a franchise-caliber edge protector who's only still available at this point because he's recovering from a season-ending knee injury," Brooks wrote.
Simmons started over 40 games during his four-year college career at San Diego State and Ohio State. A right tackle by trade, he started the first five games for the Buckeyes on the left side in 2024 before a leg injury sidelined him for the remainder of the 2024 season.
Even in a small sample size, Simmons proved he was a physically imposing, loose, powerful run blocker with upside in pass protection. He showed dramatic improvements as a pass protector, showing off his ability to make first meaningful contact with sticky hands while pushing pass rushers away from the backfield.
While coming off a season-ending injury, Simmons could be the top offensive lineman on the board. He should become the new fan favorite to head down to Houston if the Texans stay at No. 25.
