A Texas A&M basketball guard said he's been the subject of threats and racial slurs while playing for the Aggies this season.
Jace Carter, a senior from Florida, talked during an NCAA Tournament media availability about the harmful messages he's received.
"It's been a long year for me," Carter told reporters from the locker room after a win Thursday against Yale. "It's been crazy. I'm getting death threats, people calling me racial slurs. All types of stuff because I'm missing free throws ... If you're a little kid and not mentally strong it can mess you up. I feel like I try to approach it like a grown man. "
Williams said he's talked with Carter and his family about the messages. The head coach said he spends more time than ever talking with his players about what others say to and about them.
He said Carter's not the only one he's had to talk about it with and dealing with social media is part of the "skill set" for modern basketball. Williams has coached since 1994 and has been a head coach since 2006 (except for 2007-08).
"That's why I've kind of quit social media, just because of the things that were coming towards me. It's just dangerous. I think when you're 22 and you've grown up with a screen, you can't tell 'em, Don't look. But you have to try to find ways to educate them on how to handle it."
Texas A&M plays Michigan on Saturday in Dayton, Ohio.
