Texas softball split a double-header thriller Friday at Mississippi State, falling to the Bulldogs on a walk-off double before rallying for a win in a conference showdown between two of the top teams in the SEC.

In game one, No. 1 Texas (33-3, 6-2 SEC) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth after RBIs from Leighann Goode, Mia Scott and Reese Atwood. But Mississippi State responded with back-to-back one-out hits to tie the game at 3-3.

An inning later, the No. 18 Bulldogs (29-7, 6-2) scored on a two-out, two-strike double down the left-field line to end a duel between arguably the top two pitchers in the SEC. Mississippi State’s Chaffin Raelin (16-3) earned the complete-game win after allowing four hits with six strikeouts and one walk while Texas starter Teagan Kavan (14-2) took the loss after a complete game that included seven hits and six strikeouts without a walk.

During the second game, Texas rallied after Mississippi State took a 3-0 lead through three innings. Mia Scott started the comeback in the fourth inning with the first of her two home runs, and the Longhorns took the lead for good in the top of the seventh when Kayden Henry scored on a single from Kaydee Bennett.

For good measure, Scott then blasted a three-run home run to give the senior her first multi-homer game in a decorated career. Seven of the Longhorns’ 10 hits and six of their runs came off Raelin, who struggled in 2.1 innings of relief.

Citlaly Gutierrez (7-0) earned the win from the bullpen for Texas after taking over for Mac Morgan in the second inning, and Kavan tossed the final inning to earn her first save of the season.

“Obviously, Mississippi State played very well today; great pitching by Chaffin, who did a great job against us, and we had a hard time adjusting to it,” Texas coach Mike White said in a press release. “They came out and swung the bats (and) they played better than us and they deserved that win. Then, of course, being down in the second game, we were leaking a little bit but were able to string some hits together and found a way to hit Chaffin the second time. Hopefully, we’ll be able to carry some momentum over into the next game.”

Because of the threat of inclement weather, the teams moved Saturday’s scheduled second game to Friday. The two teams will enter the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. tied for third place in the SEC standings. LSU leads the conference with a 6-1 record while Oklahoma is 8-2.
