The Texas Tech baseball team's had a rough first two months of the season, partly due to the Red Raiders biting off more than they could chew from a schedule standpoint. Tech ranks No. 2 nationally in strength of schedule, and the Red Raiders are just about to start one of the hardest stretches.
Tech's next three conference series are against Arizona State, No. 22 Arizona and No. 20 West Virginia, the top three teams in this week's Big 12 power rankings. Tech (11-21, 7-8 in the Big 12) challenges Arizona State (23-14, 9-6) at 8:30 p.m. CDT Thursday, 9 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The two programs are going in opposite directions with the Sun Devils in position to make the NCAA tournament for the first time in four years and the Red Raiders likely to miss it for the second year in a row.
Both teams have just lost twice in three-game series against Cincinnati, the Red Raiders two weeks ago in Lubbock and the Sun Devils last weekend in Cincinnati. Tech bounced back by taking two of three from Baylor last weekend, only its second Big 12 series win out of eight dating to last season. The Sun Devils have Big 12 series wins over No. 23 TCU, Kansas and Utah.

Tech coach Tim Tadlock said Tuesday that infielder T.J. Pompey, who started 12 games this season at third base and four at shortstop, will be out the rest of the season with an apparent wrist injury from being hit by a pitch. Pompey hasn't played since March 30. Tadlock said high-leverage relief pitcher Parker Hutyra, who last appeared in a game March 22, also will be on the shelf for two more weeks.
Arizona State ranks third in the Big 12 in runs per game, averaging 8.2, and fifth in NCAA Division I in fielding percentage (.983).
Arizona State has one of the Big 12's hottest hitters in Matt King, a senior shortstop from Kingwood. During a 14-game hitting streak, he's 32 for 60 with three home runs and 21 RBIs. That's raised his average to .405, second in the Big 12, and his season totals to three homers and 27 RBIs.
Among the Sun Devils' other big sticks are first baseman Jacob Tobias (.320-5-38), third baseman Nu'u Contrades (.303-4-29), designated hitter Brandon Compton (.289-6-40), center fielder Isaiah Jackson (.279-5-33) and catcher Josiah Cromwick (.241-9-24). Right fielder Kien Vu (.330-6-21), a third-team All-American last year, recently returned from a 10-game injury-related absence.
