A day after Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens left the series opener early in a strategic move by coach Karen Weekly, the Vol ace handcuffed the Texas softball lineup in a 3-1 win Saturday that evened the SEC series at 1-1.
The teams will face off in a third and final game Sunday at noon at McCombs Field in Austin.
The No. 1 Longhorns (39-4, 11-3 SEC) had just four hits Saturday as Pickens picked up the complete-game win for No. 5 Tennessee (33-9, 8-6). They scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Katie Cimusz drove in Joley Mitchell with a single.
Expect Texas to see Pickens again Sunday, and expect Texas coach MIke White to turn to his own ace in Teagan Kavan. White chose to rest Kavan Saturday after his ace threw a complete-game shutout in the Longhorns’ 3-0 win in game one Friday. Mac Morgan (7-2) got the start for Texas Saturday and gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, and reliever Citlaly Gutierrez worked 4.1 innings and didn’t allow a run until the seventh.
Follow below for live scores and updates as Texas and Tennessee meet to determine the series winner between two SEC contenders. The first pitch is at noon.
The Texas lineup includes, in order: RF Ashton Maloney, CF Kayden Henry, 3B Mia Scott, C Reese Atwood, 1B Joley Mitchell, LF Katie Stewart, DP Katie Cimusz, SS Leighann Goode and 2B Kaydee Bennett.
The Tennessee lineup includes, in order: CF Kinsey Fiedler, 3B Taylor Pannell, 1B McKenna Gibson, C Sophia Nugent, SS Laura Mealer, RF Gabby Leach, DP Amaya Doyle, 2B Ella Dodge and LF Saviya Morgan.
As expected, both teams will lean on the aces today. Pickens (16-4) leads the SEC with a 0.93 ERA, and Kavan leads the SEC with 17 wins. Pickens has 163 strikeouts and 39 walks in 120 innings this season, and she was the winner in game 2. Kavan (18-2) has a 1.42 ERA and 164 strikeouts and 28 walks in 118.1 innings. She won game 1 of this series: Remember: Pickens started game 1 but left after the first inning as part of a load management plan by Tennessee coach Karen Weekly. I doubt very seriously we will a similar strategy today
