He is already a millionaire but sees the need to ***** out his family name for a few bucks more. This guy is making a mockery of himself and the NFL. What I don't get is all the attention the NFL Network give to him and Farve, two of the more selfish players in the league. He has turned into an attention grabbing TO. I think him and Pacman should quit football and join the WWF they would be nice additions there. It would be disgusting if the NFL allowed him to wear that shirt. What an embarassment to the league if they do.

It's def. over the top, but I don't see it as a big deal. He found a loop-hole in the system and he's doing what he does, love it or hate it. I don't think he's selling out his family name, it can and will be changed back at a later date.

I personally find it hilarious and one of the reasons I really like Chad John er Ocho Cinco.

I guess I missed the part where the NFL was some hallowed sport where the chief objective was not to make money hand over fist.

So, assuming there isn't another "Cinco" in the team, isn't he required to only put "Cinco" on his name plate?

What we he do if traded to a team with #85 retired?

Exactly. People take football way too seriously. This is a game and entertainment and Chad Johnson is definitely entertaining.

As someone who minored in Spanish, does he realize that the direct translation of "Ocho Cinco" is "eight five" not "eighty-five"?

Whoops.....

no, his entire last name is now Ocho Cinco. i think it is awesome. Bengal fans need something to laugh about, with the way that organization is run. good by chad, and i hope they let him wear it during games.

yes - i'm pretty sure he does realize it translates into Eight Five ... in english he's referred to himself as that before ...... lot of players actually do this

as for the name change, i think it's stupid - he should be more worried about staying healthy, getting open and helping his team win

i also don't see what he has to gain from it, other than attention (most of it negative)

if that's his legal name i'm sure the league will have to allow him to use it on his jersey

great - who cares and how does it help him at all?

the name will be licensenced through the NFLPA and NFL properties and any additional jerseys sold, etc will also fill the league's pockets before his

so that leads to increased endorsement revenue?! - not sure how or what his angle is

personally I think the guy is batpoop crazy

He knows--it's been pointed out ad nauseum.

He just likes the sound of 8-5 better.

He's lost his mind, but this is semi-funny.

Chad Johnson has a hard enough time with the English language much less Spanish.

I think it's hilarious that he takes himself as seriously as he does. I have no problem with him changing his name, like I really care less. If his biggest crime is changing his name for whatever reason, then I say have at it. I can't believe this bothers people as much as it does.

Not more than one game. Fined Plummer for the whole season. Bastards.

Per Bengals.com;

It was official in Florida.

Now it is official in the NFL.

The former Chad Johnson is now Chad Ocho Cinco and will wear the name on the back of his uniform in Baltimore Opening Day Sunday.

The Bengals sent out the following press release:

"Effective today, the Bengals begin the process of listing the former Chad Johnson as Chad Ocho Cinco for all club business, per the legal change of his surname effected in Florida. The list of appropriate changes will include the player wearing the name Ocho Cinco on the back of his jersey for Sunday's season opener at Baltimore."

The No. 85 Ocho Cinco jersey could go on sale at the Paul Brown Stadium Pro Shop as early as Wednesday, said Monty Montague, the Bengals merchandise manager.

"At the latest, we're hoping Thursday," Montague said. "We think it's going to be a big seller because Chad has gone by that name for awhile."

Asked why the NFL decided to recognize the name change, league spokesman Greg Aiello said in an e-mail, "It's his legal surname."
