is this college football season. No undefeateds (likely) and a bunch of one loss teams, all of which will have a claim to be in the BS Title game... but, yeah, college football doesn't need a playoff. Give me a freaking break.

How about South Florida being the only undefeated team :D

It's going to be something like South Florida and Hawaii being the only unbeatens and claiming they should play for the championship.

:biglaugh:

The BCS totally deserves the mess it's going to get at the end of this season. I hate it. The most exciting sport on the planet has the lamest way of determining a champ.

I will never understand the formulas.

Cal beat Oregon at Oregon and yet is rated behind Oregon in every poll now despite them both having one loss?

Also surprised LSU didn't drop further, note I think they probably are the best team I've seen but they did lose.

Crazy season.

These whines don't accomplish anything.

If we had a 4 team playoff system, some teams would still get screwed. An 8 team playoff? Better, but then you'd have to cut back the regular schedules to 11 games to allow some time off from football for final exams and start the playoffs earlier.

That wouldn't please anybody because the 2nd tier bowls would mean less, draw less, pay out less and all the conferences would be pissed at the loss of revenue from 1 less game and lower bowl revenue.

Again, you accomplish nothing good.

This whole playoff argument is naive. If it made financial sense, it would be implemented in a heartbeat. The only thing academic types like as well as tenure and paid sabbaticals is increased revenue.

Forget playoffs for a second, how about giving more weight to the computer rankings? Something like 1/3 the average of the three polls (AP/Harris/USA Today) and 2/3 computer ranking. Or even getting rid of the biased polls altogether and just going by the average of the computer scores?

Five of the six computers used in the BCS rankings had USF No. 1. Ohio State is top ranked, thanks to finishing first in the USA/Today coaches poll and Harris Poll. But the computers, which make up a third of the BCS rankings, were not so impressed. Three of the six computers did not rank Ohio State in the top six.

The NCAA Division I-A (FBS) strength of schedule rankings, based on games played, had USF's schedule the 12th toughest in the country while Ohio State was rated 72nd. All of the computers use strength of schedule to determine their rankings.
How can a team with the 72nd toughest schedule so far be ranked #1 overall? For them to go undefeated seems like a very small feat.

A playoff system would make plenty of money - probably more than is now generated. The question is, would the money get distributed any differently than it is now? The old boy network lines their pockets very efficiently with the current bowl system - change is threatening.

Very good point.

Now we just need Notre Dame to beat USC and this season will be the craziest on record.
