What is the best sequel for a movie where a sequel was NOT originally planned. Most sequels like this are really bad because the plot line is exactly the same as the first.

Yeah, I would have to agree there for sure...although I didn't think Terminator wasn't meant for a sequel.

But Alien for sure wasn't, and that was a great sequel!

Aliens - best sequel ever!!!
Would Godfather II be considered? Or was it planned?

Honorable mention:

Evil Dead II
Phantasm II
The Toxic Avenger IV: Citizen Toxie
Bride of Chucky

Bill and Teds Bogus Journey. :D

I'll have to go with Chaplin on T2 and Aliens, the sequel so good it got an "s" instead of a number.

Weren't "Desperado" and "El Mariachi" the same story? Just one was shot in English, one in Spanish?

I would say "Empire Strikes Back".

Lucas may say that he had a whole 9-part series planned, but I remember inteviews of his when I was a kid that contradict that idea. I don't think he really ever thought that they would be a sequel.

No, that is not correct, although I agree with you that they are extremely similar.

I think Star Wars is a special case. That movie was made and ended like a serial to prepare for a sequel. The question was whether they planned on making one. I'm not sure if that was the case, but Star Wars was made pretty cheaply, and maybe they thought they could still make the 2nd chapter of the films with a relatively lower budget. Fortunately, Episode IV made a ton of money, and we were able to get a much more polished Episode V as a result.

Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and finialy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and from the little old movie known as Clerks.

Of course there is American History X, but I have to admit that I never saw the first 9:D

Once again, I’ll go with Rambo II. There was an alternative ending for First Blood in which Rambo commits suicide, however test audiences found it too depressing. Hence the sequels. (Good choice)
