Jennifer Connelly Joins The Blood Diamond

October 12, 2005

Jennifer Connelly is in talks to star opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in director Edward Zwick's dramatic thriller The Blood Diamond at Warner Bros. Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The African adventure is set in Sierra Leone circa 1999, a time when the nation was in the midst of a horrific civil war. DiCaprio plays the role of a smuggler who specializes in the sale of "blood diamonds," also known as "conflict diamonds" -- the precious stones used to finance rebellions, privateers and terrorists.

When the smuggler encounters an indigenous Mende farmer whose young son has disappeared into the RUF's army of child soldiers, the two men's fates become linked.

The story is by Charles Leavitt and C. Gaby Mitchell, with a screenplay by Leavitt and Zwick (The Last Samurai) & Marshall Herskovitz.

The studio is aiming to begin shooting early next year and is eyeing locations in Africa.

Plot Summary: Set against the backdrop of the chaos and civil war that enveloped 1990s Sierra Leone, "Blood Diamond" is the story of Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio), a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou), a Mende fisherman. Both men are African, but their histories and their circumstances are as different as any can be—until their fates become joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives.

While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon—who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields—has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone. With the help of Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly), an American journalist whose idealism is tempered by a deepening connection with Archer, the two men embark on a trek through rebel territory. More than a search for a valuable diamond, the journey could save Solomon's family and give Archer the second chance he thought he would never have.

Leo is a great actor. For the most part every one of his movies have been entertaining and nominated for a major award in some fashion.

Yep, I even enjoyed his role in Titanic. When it is all said and done, he will be considered on of the best of our generation.

Leo is a sick actor...I was kind of turned off by his accent in the trailer for this, but I put that off as because it was before Departed and just was weird to hear that accent before a movie where he was to play a Boston cop.

Hounsou was fantastic in Amistad...

I'm interested in seeing this movie.

Yes for Hounsou in Amistad.

No for Leo in Gangs of New York. Accident would fade in and out.

Triple Amistad. One of the best movies of the last decade.

Saw Blood Diamond yesterday.

I really enjoyed it, but I was confused as to what kind of movie it was trying to be. Sometimes it felt like a Schindler's List type of true, historical look at a bad time in history, but then it felt like a normal Hollywood action-adventure.

I think Connelly was the weakest part of the movie. The romance was forced and I don't see how she was that upset over him when they barely got to know each other.

Regardless...DiCaprio and Hounsou were magnificent. I mean, just very, very good. One of the roles in which DiCaprio just didn't seem like the boyish guy from Titanic for once. I totally believed who he was.

And Hounsou was superb. He needs to win a damn Oscar for the love of God. Some scenes where all he did was have his eyes huge with rage, violent rage inside him, but containing it barely...it was amazing to see.

He's one of the best actors we have.

Perfectly stated Mike. Glad to see we agree on their acting performances.

Right on, Chandler Mike.

I've never been a Leonardo fan, but after the Howard Hughes role and now this one, he's clearly grown up in a lot of ways.

Hounsou was impressive.

Excellent story, well-written, well-executed. No prettying up the war.

Absolutely! I recently watched this. Great movie. Some of those scenes were difficult to watch (the ones with the children).
