Just reported on ESPN, the Cards as expected have a SIGNIFICANT amount of money to spend in the coming days..

As of the moment they are 37.3 million under the cap (23 million under the Cap FLOOR)..

Only two teams have more.. the Seahags (39 million) and the Bucs (59.2)..

but WAIT there's more..

This number does not include the expected cuts of D. Anderson (4 million) and J. Porter (6 million).. This means the Cardinals will be 47 million under the cap and will have to spend at least 33+ million this offseason...

Lets let that soak in a bit.. the Cards have up to 47 million to spend in the next few days...

I have my ideas for how I hope they will proceed, but regardless money should not be an issue for helping us turn this thing around...

Thoughts?

we only have about 25 guys under contract right now. So a good portion of it will go to re sign our guys....
but we still have enough to get a QB,...an O-Lineman,...and maybe an impact LB.....with perhaps a stud #2 WR thrown in.

I think that cap number includes about 50 of our guys. Somebody bump Joes spreadsheet.

Posluzsny from Buffalo may be worth a look....it would be nice if we could focus most of our FA attention on these four year guys.....just hitting their primes, but still a bit under valued....IMO there is great value to be had in that group.

Pos looked completely lost and ineffective when Buffalo tried and failed with the 3-4 last year. Strictly 4-3 guy IMO.

We have 41, plus the "rule of 51" still applies.

Special transition rules to protect veteran players in 2011. All teams will have approximately $3.5 million in what would otherwise be performance-based pay available to fund veteran player salaries.

Does this mean the Cards have another $3.5 million above the cap they can spend on veteran players?

This is from Alex Marquez from Fox Sports.com:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/...rgaining-agreement-question-and-answer-072511

Q: How will the salary cap system work this season?
A: The cap for player salaries will stand at roughly $120.4 million. Teams must spend 99 percent of that amount (about $119 million) for the 2011 season, which is a much higher rate than in the previous CBA. The same 99-percent figure stands for the 2012 campaign

so just to keep track of this... the Cards before F.A. were 37 million under.. they cut DA (4 million) and it looks like in all likelyhood will trade DRC (4.5 million) meaning we are about 45 million under..

The have thus far signed Jeff king (2-3 million?) and Ben Grapham (1-2 million?)

Lets for a second assume we rework the Kolb for 10 million a year (which imo is generous) that puts us around 30-32 million under still....

so we HAVE to spend at least 22-24 million in salaries this year...

To me it gives us the ability to sign our guys AND 1 significant F.A... any thoughts on who?

Why would we rework Kolb? Wouldn't we just extend him a few years. His nut this year is only 1.4M

Yikes! this is not exactly a lineup of free agents that would get anyone excited.

Any trade for a QB will come with a new contract.

I believe so. If I got the rule correct it means you can go above the cap by 3.5 mill as long as you use it on a veteran with 5 or more years of service, and it is capped at 1 mill per player.

So I just re-read the official cap proposal and I was wrong..

2011 and 2012 teams must spend 99% of the cap..

The final 8 years they can spend 89.6% but stay at 95% total...

This is why this year will be different for the Cardinals.. In previous years the Cards could get by with losing players and pocketing the savings.. NOT THIS YEAR :D

Now if we can just make sure not to blow it by overpaying medicore talent...

This makes me think we should/will land atleast 2 starter F.A., I agree with the sentiment that we are biding time until Friday so as not to get played off and the price driven up...

ok here is an update based on the approx numbers thus far

Cap space including cuts of DA (4 million) trade of DRC 42.2 million under

Jeff King just a guess around 3.5

Colledge- 5.5

Ben Grapham- 1.5

Kevin Kolb- 10 million

puts us at about 20 million left to spend... This also does not include the expected cut of Joey Porter which will free another 4-5 million...

The Cards could do what they have done in the past and front load the King/Colledge deals to eat more cap this year and give us flexibility next year, and STILL sign a significant F.A. or two...

Should be interesting, but for those of you counting at home we are right around 20-24 million in cap room still..
