Normally, this isn't a movie I would ever rent, but I heard some positive reviews on it, so I decided to check it out. I have to say, that it wasn't bad.
The movie starts out at a compound where a Manson-style family have been living, kidnapping and killing their victims and then burying or dismembering them. Their farm is raided by the local sheriff's office and some members are killed and some escape. The rest of the film is basically the sheriff pursuing the gang and the gang's attempts to escape from justice.
The fugitives, Capt. Spaulding, Otis Driftwood and Baby (characters from Zombie's other film House of 1,000 Corpses) are sadistic, but it isn't over-the-top, gore-for-gore's sake. Even when the gang does kill innocent victims there aren't any torture or rape scenes. In the one scene where people are tortured, the people being tortured deserve it.
It is entertaining to see just how the bad people will meet their end, if at all, and William Forsythe is very good as the sheriff in the kind of tough-guy role that he excels at. The movie also tries to top The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the number of weird and ugly characters it can present the audience.
