Sylvester Stallone Explains Why The Expendables 3 Will Be PG-13

"We want to reach as many people as possible. It’s very close to an R, believe me, it’s right there. But I think we owe it to the next generation. We thought we’d join that club for a while."

Wait hold up, PG13?

Yup. Lame.

Sly thinks they'll get more young eyeballs with a pg-13 rating, completely oblivious to the fact that NO ONE that young knows or gives a crap about any of these guys.

Exactly! Such a dumb move. Their target audience is guys like us and older. Especially guys who grew up watching these guys' films. Also according to the preview it's the last one. So why not make it an awesomely violent, bloody over the top hilarious vulgar piece of awesomeness it has the potential to be? (With at least 1 totally hilarious/gratuitous nude scene of-course, just as a nod to the 80's!) I mean that's the movie 90% of us would want if you pitched us this. lol Talk about a wasted opportunity.

These guys aren't gonna appeal to any "young viewers" Just go out in a blaze of glory boys!!!

Looks good. Can't wait to see it.. But, Kelsey Grammer?

I wondered the same thing.

Not totally true, now I can watch it with my son. He will enjoy it thouroughly and I can transition that into older awesome Arnold movies and etc. I like a good rated R movie but action is one of those genres that can get away with pg13 and still be cool.

Gibson's the big bad in this one.

That said, Grammer definitely has the chops to play a bad guy. He was GREAT as the anti-hero in the short lived STARZ series Boss.

I hope they give Antonio Banderas something to do. I don't remember when but he was one of those guys that just fell off the map after being hot for a short while.

Plot Summary: In "The Expendables 3," Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables -- but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables’ most personal battle yet.

They are discussing going in a different direction in the future and having a female Expendables franchise.

I'd be game for that. I saw Expendables 3 today. 2/3 of the movie was just plain fun--the first 1/3 and the last 1/3. I could have slept through the middle 1/3. Worth seeing, but believe it or not, Snipes, Banderas, and Gibson were the stars of the movie, in that order.

let me guess, the middle 1/3 was the portion of the movie where for some reason, Stallone went on a mission WITHOUT any of the people you came to see the movie for and rode with the newbies, in a mistaken attempt to draw younger viewers.

That bit was okay. I'll put it in spoilers because I don't want to spoil it for others.

Grammer's character was cool, but the whole flying all over the country recruiting sequence was yawn-worthy. Just dragged and dragged for me.

Even though these actors are old, but do you think they get paid quite a bit for these 3 movies? They have big names in all of them ...

Considering how little they are making nowadays, I'm sure the salaries are all B-movie levels. Of course, there might be some exceptions, like Harrison Ford, Schwarzenegger and Stallone himself. But I can't imagine Wesley Snipes and Dolph Lundgren getting huge salaries for this movie.

Snipes needs to pay for his back taxes! :doi:

Why do you think it was awful?

Where do I begin?

The UFC crew they cast was terrible. Randy Couteur was never a great actor, but he was Laurence Olivier next to Ronda Rousey and Tito Ortiz.

Mel Gibson was good, but he basically had no other support with a personality. There was very little reason to care for either what Gibson was doing or that the Expendables were trying to prevent. At least Van Damme had Scott Adkins in #2.

Wesley Snipes was adequate, and even had a tax evasion joke, but he was assimilated so quickly it had no impact, even when they tried to develop a rivalry with Jason Statham. There was some promise there at the beginning, but then he pretty much became a standard team member with no real personality to stand out from everyone else.

Schwarzenegger and especially Jet Li were wastes of space. Hell, Jet Li didn't even fight anyone hand-to-hand! Ronda Rousey did, but they pretty much made her do UFC moves that were neither surprising nor interesting.

The story was paper-thin and uninteresting, and Mel Gibson did a great job as the villain, but it felt like he didn't have much to do except wait for the Expendables to come and blow stuff up. Which they do a lot of.
