David Goyer Takes on The Flash
Source: Variety
December 17, 2004

Blade: Trinity writer/director and Batman Begins writer David Goyer has committed to write, produce and direct a feature adaptation of DC Comics' The Flash for Warner Bros. Pictures, says Variety.

Created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert, the Flash first appeared in DC Comics late in 1939. He's the alter ego of chemistry student Jason Peter "Jay" Garrick, an aspiring athlete whose exposure to heavy water fumes gives him the ability to move at incredible speeds.

"'Flash' is my favorite of the properties," said Goyer, "I think the character of the Flash, who moves faster than the speed of light, opens itself up to rich cinematic and story ideas."

Latest rumor has Goyer possibly casting Ryan Reynolds (Blade III, Van Wilder, etc.) as the Flash...and he's leaning towards using Wally West instead of Jay Garrick or Barry Allen.

Yeah, but he hasn't been a sidekick for decades. He's The Flash, now.

Make all the double entendres you want about Ryan Reynolds flashing people or apparently being as quick as a flash. Whatever the case it now seems set, the DC comics character "The Flash" is definitely making a comeback and the man behind it wants his "Blade: Trinity" star in the part. Move over John Wesley Shipp it seems.

In an interview with Moviehole, Director David Goyer confirmed that "Warner Bros, and they came to me and said ‘You did a great job on Batman [Goyer wrote the "Batman Begins" script], the next big one we want to get up and running is The Flash or Green Lantern – are you interested?’. I said I would love to do The Flash. I think there’s a lot of cinematic possibilities that nobodies ever done. I’m interested in really pushing it, and dealing with relativity, so near the end of the story he’s going to be like arriving before he left, and all sorts of weird and cute little stuff"

Goyer confirmed its going to be a lot lighter than his work on "Batman" or "Blade" and will be using the character of Wally West. Casting wise "There’s nobody yet, I’m just writing it, but I would love to have Ryan [Reynolds] play Wally West".

Reynolds himself was asked about the possibility to which he replied "If that were to come to fruition it would depend on a lot of things, but one of them wouldn’t involve auditioning. Wally West is a guy that likes to have a bit of fun in his life, he’s a little bit sarcastic, a little bit acerbic, but I’d love to inject a little bit more heart into Wally. I think it’d be really cool. I mean David explained the story to me –wow, Holy ****. His rough story for The Flash is just ****ing mind-boggling. I hesitate to say its one of the best script stories I’ve heard for a long, long time. So yeah, if it were to come to fruition I’d be very excited".

It shouldn't be dark, and Reynolds is right about Wally's character.

Reynolds Says He Would be The Flash
Source: FilmRoach
March 20, 2005

'FilmRoach' tells us that The Amityville Horror and Blade: Trinity star Ryan Reynolds said today in Los Angeles that he will star as The Flash if the project goes ahead.

He confirmed that he had a meeting the previous night with David Goyer, and if Warner Bros. green lights his script, he said, "I am the Flash."

Blade: Trinity writer/director and Batman Begins writer David Goyer has committed to write, produce and direct the feature adaptation of DC Comics' The Flash.

Are you saying the guy from the TV series, Shipp, is the guy from Dawson's Creek's dad?

I guess they do look alike, I just never knew it.

I liked the TV show.

David Goyer (by way of his blog) has revealed that he is not writing and directing The Flash.

He basically said that he and Warner Bros. could not agree on what would make a good Flash movie.

Shawn Levy to Direct The Flash
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
February 5, 2007

Night at the Museum helmer Shawn Levy will direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Flash, the big-screen adaptation of the DC Comics speedster hero, says The Hollywood Reporter. Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing and Levy may produce as well.

Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert, The Flash has the ability to run and move extremely fast, use superhuman reflexes and violate certain laws of physics, like time travel.

David Goyer, who co-wrote Batman Begins for Warners, had been attached to write, direct and produce a screen adaptation. But Goyer quietly left the project several months ago, though it was not until Friday that he announced his departure on his MySpace page.

The trade adds that Levy, who before "Museum" had been known for such comedies as Cheaper by the Dozen and The Pink Panther, has no intention of making "Flash" a comedy but is aiming for a lighter movie than previous Warners comic book adaptations, such as Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Goyer's "Flash" also had been dark-themed.

Levy will oversee the writing of the new draft, and it is believed elements of Goyer's script will be used in the development process.

Flash is one of those characters that shouldn't be dark, IMO, so I'm not displeased to see it will be headed that direction. But I'm bummed that Goyer is no longer attached.

I hope Ryan Reynolds is still interested.
