The reason I think this didn't do well at the box office is that if you didn't read the books you have NO idea what it is about. The trailers are just a confusing mash of stuff and it doesn't give you a clue about the story.

The plot summary doesn't help either...

So it's a movie adapted from a book about ????

Saw this yesterday. Excellent movie that held pretty much true to the book. I was skeptical about Mara, but she did a fantastic job as Lisbeth.

Saw it - pretty grim stuff, but very well done - really well-acted --Mara Rooney was amazing. Generally well-directed, but I agree, the pacing was off, or the momentum or something -- about the time it should have been reaching intolerable tension, I found myself looking at my watch, thinking, 'jeez, hasn't it already been like 2 hours? and we're still just in the set-up phase?' It did move - and wrap - very fast at the end, but the run-up to that action seemed quite sluggish at times and uneven.

I couldn't take my eyes off her when she was on-screen... captivating IMO

I couldn't either and it had nothing to do with her fantastic acting. :)

I just watched it. I thought the pacing was perfect. Yeah it was long (I prefer 2.5-3 hours for this genre), but it seemed to move along quite well.

Indeed. Awesome job. I didn't think she would do as well as the lady in the foreign version, but it almost seemed like it was the same actress.

Warning. My wife is half way thru book two also. We saw this last night and she said there was a spoiler in the movie that they hadn't yet explained in the books.

Donald, we seem to have similar tastes in reading.

How would you rate this series say compared to the Hunger Games trilogy?

Is it worth investing the time in?

Wow that would be a tough comparison, just too different. This book kind of reminded me of Bonfire of the Vanities in a sense (multiple stories of flawed characters which slowly begin to intertwine), but then throw in some Silence of the Lambs to boot. It's kind of twisted, sexual and sometimes violently so. It starts off kind of slowly but builds to a really strong book with lots of huge reveals and excitement. I'm in the second one now, and so far it is a lot faster paced.

I really am digging it, but I'm very eclectic in reading...

Lisbeth Salandar is a unique, enjoyable and interesting character.

If you aren't put off by violence or sex in your novels, it's a phenomenal read. If you are ok with that but don't prefer it, it's still a great read.

For those who don't know, Rooney Mara is the granddaughter of Wellington Mara, owner of the NY Giants, and is the great granddaughter of Art Rooney late owner of the Steelers.

Really enjoyed the movie but hated the ending... just to stark and raw for me. They could have softened to the same end, and should have. Still, 4.5 out of 5.
