Well when everyone disagrees with me, it makes me re-think my perspective.
Four or five people on the forum isn't everyone. Your first reaction to the Browns trading for Taylor has as much validity as other first reactions. It is your opinion and not an error of fact, so don't give up your lunch money on the playground so easily---even if you get compliments from the ones who take it from you.
After all, we are talking the Browns (keep that in mind for the rest of my post).
Who knows how the Browns have the QBs in this draft rated??? Personally, I just don't see a single guy who is the future HOF QB in the bunch. The only QB in this class that has a higher NFL.com draft rating ahead of #1 Trub. of last year is Darnold. Does anyone think he is a future HOF? Isn't that the expectation for a #1 guy in the entire draft class?
Do the Browns see Taylor as better or at least equal to anything in this draft? If so, they just got a QB for a #3 and have their other picks to get some guys who do have future HOF written on them---how about Barkley and Chubb at the top now that they have their QB?
Even if the Browns consider Taylor as only a 'bridge QB' it doesn't force them into a high-pick QB this year.
The draft will still be held next year. They could install Taylor as the QB (he has a better track record so far over Kizer) and trade one or even both of their high picks for futures . . . and still have Taylor on his two-year contract as a bridge guy for next year when they take a QB.
The other possibility that could salvage your original statement would be for the Browns to sign a FA QB based on their bankroll cap space. What if they blow away the other teams and cough up the cash for Cousins? They would have their starter, a former starter at backup QB, and use their picks on other position players besides QB. That would trigger some serious leapfrogging by teams desperate for a QB.
For a team that loves to trade for future picks, bartering away one or even both (yikes) of their top picks would net them a draft bounty for years to come. The Browns would rule the draft for years. They'd have all the prime property titles on the Monopoly board even if they don't know how to build motels on them.
