On May 16th (this coming Saturday) that all pro sports can resume without fans. What does it really mean in reality? Ok, Arizona teams can start practicing again without spectators but will each league allow it? Either Arizona teams will get the upper hand/advantage in practice time or the state of Arizona will be flooded by players from MLB, NFL, NBA & the NFL, or both? Maybe I'm interpreting what I read wrong but it sounds like to me that the state of Arizona is ok with this, now it's up to all 4 major sports leagues?

This is paving the way for AZ and FLA to basically host all remaining MLB games, until other states open up. Possibly NBA, too. If there aren't any fans, it doesn't matter if all the teams are just sharing a few stadiums...

I was thinking baseball first, mainly because that's been an ongoing discussion for a while now.

The NFL has stated that until all team facilities in every state are allowed to open, none of them are allowed to open. So as far as the Cardinals go, this announcement doesn't appear to mean anything. As for other sports, IDK.
ahhh rats. cant help but think of how this sets back K1 and Hopkins.. I know Hopkins is a professional and will show up prepared but timing is huge between QB and WR

The MLB PA will never agree to being stuck here over the summer without their families making a fraction of their salary. You can’t blame DD for trying though...

It was an interesting announcement by the Governor. It paves the way for all sports to begin again with Arizona being the so called lead location. It can bring money into the state. I suspect that other states will follow suit. However, I really am not sure of what will actually happen or when. After all, sports is a business and lots of money is at stake here.

Arizona governor says pro sports can resume without fans May 16

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has opened the door for professional sports to return to the state.

Ducey said Tuesday that professional sports, including MLB, the NBA, the NHL and the NFL, can resume without fans on Saturday. The state is starting to reopen during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with Ducey saying on social media that Arizona is "trending in the right direction."

Ducey said he has had discussions with "leaders of some of these leagues," but he did not say which ones or elaborate on what activities might take place in Arizona. Last month, he said he had spoken with Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and was open to hosting games.

Other sports such as basketball and hockey have considered playing the remainder of their regular seasons in hubs, with several teams playing in one location.

"It would be, at this point in time, according to the CDC guidelines, without fans," Ducey said at a news conference. Citing his public health director, he said, "We could do that safely in the state of Arizona beginning May 16.

Hopefully they can have adequate testing by the time the nfl season starts. That would help a lot in helping the season move forward.

America needs football right now more than ever.

Why would they make a fraction of the salary? MLB contracts are guaranteed!!!! Also, who says they wouldn't bring their families with them? I can see teams taking over hotels and short-term rentals all over the valley.

Lastly, if you think any of these leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, etc) that have all expressed these options, haven't already had discussions with their player's unions, you'd probably be mistaken. There is too much $$ on the line, for them to not have had serious discussions 1st, before coming up with contingency plans.

Wherever they play, they will get a pro-rated portion.

The ones I have heard complaining the most about the All-Arizona proposal were some of the higher paid players. Rank and File may be more willing to "sacrifice".

Again, why pro-rated? Salaries for MLB are guaranteed. If there is no season, players get their dough.

Because that is the deal they agreed to. Players WON'T get paid if there is no season.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/28964249/what-mlb-deal-players-means-2020-season-beyond

Their salaries for 2020 will be prorated. If teams play an 81-game schedule, players will get 50% of their full, agreed-upon money. If they play 120 games, they will receive 74%. Performance-bonus clauses will be prorated too.

If the season is canceled, the only payment players will receive is the $170 million advance teams guaranteed players to be distributed in April and May. The money is essentially a down payment on salaries for 2020. Should games be played, it will be factored into paychecks. If no games are played, the players get to keep the $170 million without repayment.

The agreement adds that players cannot sue for their salaries -- an important distinction even though Paragraph 11 almost certainly would have held up in a grievance setting.

The NFL will be in action this Fall. There may be social distancing and limited seating. I will be happy to buy tickets from anyone who doesn’t want to go. September is a long way from now.

How will the players practice social distancing while blocking and tackling each other?

How will the players, coaches, trainers and staff members practice social distancing and stay safe?

How will the players be able to feel safe that they will not be bringing the virus home and infecting their wives and kids?

How does the players union agree to put them in danger?

Only the states that value $$$ more than the lives at stake will follow suit before there is effective treatment and solid testing in place.

Good. States have the right to decide what activities go on in their jurisdiction. AND PLAYERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO PLAY FOOTBALL. I support any player who doesn’t want to go onto the field because they don’t feel comfortable being within 6 feet of another human being. Next man up

Announcing that states are open for sports is actually meaningless. I have my doubts about the season being played at all do to all the risk factors for players, officials, travel issues and all the support staff that must be accounted for in addition to their collective risks to their families. Bottom line for me as we are a far ways from actually having any major sports games being played anywhere in the USA.

Games will be played, mark it down....Now they may have to shut things down, but week 1 will happen...I think the only sport that may call the season off is the NHL, but I wouldn't say that's [emoji817]. NFL, NBA and MLB will definitely play games this year.

All leagues have basically spent the last 2 months working out contingencies on top of contingencies...
