I know we discussed this in the Stout/remake thread...here's an update.

Dave Meyers Directing The Hitcher
Source: Bloody-Disgusting
June 20, 2005

Bloody-Disgusting has learned that music video director Dave Meyers will helm Platinum Dunes' and Rogue Pictures' The Hitcher, a remake of the 1986 thriller.

Platinum has previously brought The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror remakes to theaters. Both films have outgrossed their production costs in their opening weekends.

Directed by Robert Harmon, the original "Hitcher" starred C. Thomas Howell as an ordinary teen who picks up the hitchhiker from hell, a role originated by Rutger Hauer. The serial killer torments the youth by implicating him in each of his crimes.

Oh geez.

That movie was awesome.

Rutger Hauer was great in that movie.

That's the key to making a good B movie, finding good unknown actors that will work for peanuts.

Jennifer Jason Leigh was too.

Great movie, when I first saw Joy Ride I thought whoever made that had just spent a weekend watching the Hitcher, and Duel, and combined the 2.

Bean and Bush in The Hitcher Remake
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
June 1, 2006

Sean Bean and Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) will star in The Hitcher, Rogue Pictures' remake of the 1986 horror film being produced by Platinum Dunes, says The Hollywood Reporter. Veteran music video helmer Dave Meyers directs.

The script follows a young couple driving across the country who become prey for a serial killer, who blames all of his murders on the young man.

Bean will carve out the serial killer role made famous by Rutger Hauer in the original. Bush has been cast as the young woman while casting is imminent on the young man.

Eric Bernt wrote the current draft. Producing are Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller as well as Charles Meeker and Alfred Haber. Production is scheduled to start this month in Austin and Santa Fe, N.M.

Bean is hardly an unknown actor, but he should be good as the hitcher!

Bean? What's scary about a hitcher with a turkey on his head?

Release Date: January 19, 2007

Director: Dave Meyers
Screenwriter: Jake Wade Wall, Eric Bernt
Genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller
MPAA Rating: R (for strong bloody violence, terror and language)
Website: NeverPickUpStrangers.com

Starring: Sean Bean, Sophia Bush, Zachary Knighton, Kyle Davis, Neal McDonough

Plot Summary: From filmmaker Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company (producers of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Amityville Horror") comes "The Hitcher," an update of the 1986 film of the same name.

Dave Meyers makes his feature directorial debut on the new thriller, which tracks the terrifying trajectory of Grace Andrews (Sophia Bush) and Jim Halsey (Zachary Knighton), a collegiate couple who are tormented by the mysterious hitchhiker John Ryder, a.k.a. The Hitcher (Sean Bean).

The young couple hit the road in a 1970 Oldsmobile 442, en route to spring break. But their pleasure trip soon turns into a waking nightmare. The initial encounters with Ryder are increasingly off-putting for Grace and Jim, and they bravely fight back when he ambushes them. But they are truly blindsided when he implicates them in a horrific slaying and continues to shadow them.

The open road becomes a suspenseful, action-packed battleground of blood and metal as, in trying to elude not only Ryder but also New Mexico State Police Lieutenant Esteridge's (Neal McDonough) officers, Grace and Jim must fight for their lives and face their fears head-on.

I thought Sean Bean seemed very menacing in the trailer. He seems to play bad guys very well. That said, I will rent it if I ever get the urge to see it.

Also saw this movie tonight at the drive in. I haven't seen the original movie, although I'm sure it's a lot better than the remake. It was so, well, boring and predictable. But, it was okay for the $5 it cost to see this and Arthur and The Invisibles. Althought Arthur was a much much better movie.
