The Last Exorcism

Release Date: August 27, 2010
Studio: Lionsgate
Director: Daniel Stamm
Screenwriter: Huck Botko, Andrew Gurland
Genre: Horror
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for disturbing violent content and terror, some sexual references and thematic material)
Website: TheLastExorcism.com

Starring: Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell

Plot Summary: When he arrives on the rural Louisiana farm of Louis Sweetzer, the Reverend Cotton Marcus expects to perform just another routine "exorcism" on a disturbed religious fanatic. An earnest fundamentalist, Sweetzer has contacted the charismatic preacher as a last resort, certain his teenage daughter Nell is possessed by a demon who must be exorcized before their terrifying ordeal ends in unimaginable tragedy.

Buckling under the weight of his conscience after years of parting desperate believers with their money, Cotton and his crew plan to film a confessionary documentary of this, his last exorcism. But upon arriving at the already blood drenched family farm, it is soon clear that nothing could have prepared him for the true evil he encounters there. Now, too late to turn back, Reverend Marcus' own beliefs are shaken to the core when he and his crew must find a way to save Nell – and themselves – before it is too late.

I just have to ask. What in the world possessed you to go see this movie. You should get professional help. Max Von Sydow is still alive, perhaps he learned enough for his role as Father Merrin to do a real exorcism.

I didn't "go" see it. It was delivered via my my mailbox. My kid stuck it in the Que on blockbuster. It came and unfortunately I watched. It was done by Eli Roth who made Hostel which I liked. So figured I would give it a go. I can't believe this made almost 80 million worldwide. On a 1.8 million budget. I'm in the wrong line of work!

Aah, I was wondering what it was doing at the theater. I didn't care for Hostel so this will be an easy pass. I'm not much into that kind of horror. I just kept thinking it was a horrible waste of nudity.

Wife and I watched it for a grand total of 20 minutes and had to stop. Actually, I stopped it 20 minutes too late. Roth is a hack. Hostel sucked. Cabin Fever was even worse. The only thing he's ever done that was worth watching was his role in Inglorious Basterds.

Oh, and to answer the question. Von Sydow is alive and well(see Shutter Island).

I watched this as part of my recent horror movie binge along with Devil, Frozen, and Splice, and all I can say is that it definitely wasn't the worst of the lot. That honor goes to Splice by a wide margin (which actually holds a 74% RT score).

I don't mind the mockumentary style movies. That worked very well for a few of them (Paranormal Activity, Quarantine (or the original [Rec]), Cloverfield). But this one is definitely one of the more forgettable ones.
