Defending champion Sloane Stephens returned to the U.S. Open quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 15 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium. No. 3 Stephens mixed her consistent, defense-to-offense style with the occasionally spectacular shot.
