I wrote/directed it. We're screening it in Los Angeles for distributors on Saturday so wish me luck.

Dude, you're the only person who's caught the last names so far!!! I wrote it during the 2003 season so they're all players who were on the roster then (and there's a character named Blake that pops up later LOL)

Man, that is so awesome!

Good luck!

It looks freaky. I've spent some time in Greer and it is a perfect setting for that type of film.

Wow, I can't believe we were supposed to be done with this in January. Damn audio glitches!!! Well, it's finally in the can and we are ready to test it for audiences.

If you're looking to catch a free movie, we're doing a test screening this Thursday June 9th at 7pm at the Tempe Cinemas (southeast corner of McClintock and Elliot). Like I said, admission is free and we have rating cards that Nielsen Entertainment hooked us up with so all we ask is you rate the film afterwards.

It is an independent film that was shot on video so if you didn't like the raw, gritty look of films like 28 Days Later or Open Water, this probably won't change your mind. While it is unrated, it would undoubtedly earn an "R" for adult language, horror violence, and sexual situations.

The trailer is available for download at our website (click on my signature and then click on the cabin door).

Yeah, we got on the Morning Picture Show w/ Colin Boyd on the Zone, too. He thought the movie had too much gore, but I think it's fairly mild - especially compared to some recent theatrical flicks.

Hometown horror on a shoestring

It’s all fun and games for nine college students who go camping in a remote cabin, until people start dying and something sinister begins terrorizing the group.

It’s “The Lonely Ones,” a locally made B-horror movie available today at video stores and online video rental and sales sites.

David Michael Quiroz Jr. of Mesa filmed the 97-minute horror movie in July 2004 on a budget of $100,000.

“It’s a typical horror movie set-up, then we turn it on its head,” said Quiroz, 27, who also directed and produced the movie. “It was a very ambitious script and we needed a bigger budget, but I think it came out great for my first attempt.”

The movie features nine local actors, and the opening sequence was filmed in front of his mother’s Gilbert home. The rest of the movie was filmed in Greer in 16 days.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling knowing my friends in Indiana can go rent it,” said Quiroz, who earned his bachelor’s degree in film from Purdue University. “It’s not your typical horror movie. There’s a lot of thinking going on, and it also has a love story. Hopefully, people will rent it and not hate it.”

Ron Berg of Gilbert, who plays one of the ghouls, Luke, in the movie, has been friends with Quiroz since the two met at Gilbert High School.

“I’m pretty proud of it,” said Berg, a bartender at a Mesa Applebee’s. “It has some flaws, but from what we had to work with, I think it turned out really well. I hope it goes places.

“If you want something that’s a good old-fashioned horror movie, it’s right up your alley,” Berg said.

“The Lonely Ones” pays homage to Quiroz’s favorite movies, “Night of the Living Dead,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Audition,” a Japanese horror movie.

Quiroz wrote the screenplay in three months, and received the financing from a college friend. The movie is being distributed by York Entertainment.

All of the film roles are named after video game characters, and the last names come from the 2003 Arizona Cardinals roster. Quiroz said he’s a huge fan of the Cardinals.

“I like watching the ideas you have put to life,” said Quiroz, who owns his own production company, Zoned In Productions. “And the actors will bring new stuff to the film.”

Quiroz teaches contemporary film studies at Chandler-Gilbert Community College and is an academic counselor at the University of Phoenix. He’s getting married in October.

Quiroz has already written the sequel to “The Lonely Ones,” and finished two other screenplays, a crime thriller called “Not Tomorrow” and a thriller called “Promise.”

• “The Lonely Ones” is available today at some local video stores, such as Hollywood Video, and online video rental and sales sites, such as Netflix and Amazon. For information and to watch a trailer, visit www.thelonelyones.com.
