I bought the book for my return flight from Seattle two days ago. I've nearly finished it. It is the best read I've had in a long time. Funny as hell and gripping. It bogs down in Science a lot, which I appreciate, but it doesn't every feel like your are reading a chemistry text book or anything like that.

If the movie is half as good as the book, it will be up for some awards.

I've read the book as well, and according to most critics, it is a great movie: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_martian/

Might have to check this out this weekend.

Saw it this evening with dcr... Fantastic movie; absolutely loved it. Damon will likely get an Oscar nod.

Excellent movie on just about all levels (I'm suspicious of a little of their science, but hey..... IT'S A MOVIE, GARTH!!!). An easy 4 out of 5 stars.

Beyond the sun.
The book had a perfect balance of humor and math/science explanations. The movie had a perfect balance of staying true to the story and visual impressiveness. Great stand-alone adaptation, and companion to the original story.

Fun movie--the Eldrond/Glorfindel joke made me about hit the floor laughing--but not great. The Hollywood ending was eye-rollingly bad, and some stuff earlier didn't click. LOVED how the beginning was insanely all over the place for the characters but didn't go crazy shaky cam for the audience.

Only 3/5 for me. Well worth the price of admission.

Very, very good. I enjoyed it, but I don't think it is getting a ton of Oscars.

My guess is gets nominated for Best Picture, possibly adapted Screenplay, but that's about it for the big boy awards.

Best picture? It'll be the worst best picture since Crash if it wins.

I said nominated. And this movie was so much better then Crash it's not even funny, IMO.

I agree. That ending was way over the top and unnecessary. Almost ruined a really good movie.

Yeah, it was the weakest part to be sure. The only part that really annoyed me was the BS romantic relationship that came out of nowhere in the last 15 minutes of the movie. At least they didn't have Watney and the Commander in bed with a baby, but that was so unnecessary.

Yeah... Gotta figure that storyline ended up on the cutting room floor in post.

I don't think it did. Book spoiler:

In the book, Watney records messages to the crew in case things go bad and he basically tells the guy to make a move already.

Then later, when the guy's quarters are overheating, the commander tells him to just bunk with the girl. They're like, "You knew about that?" It is a big no-no, but since the mission is already so out of whack, no one cares.

But since the movie never really explored the complexities of the ship turning around and going back (i.e. things breaking), they never really had a need to explore it further.

That is basically the depth of that relationship in the book. Not much to adapt.

even if it wasn't in the book, it so came out nowhere in the movie, that I wouldn't be surprised if there was more written in the screenplay and even shot, but was cut for time. I figure that part had to have a little more meat on it's bones originally to get Kate Mara on board. But maybe not.

Thanks, I haven't read the book. Which is usually better anyhow...

BUT, if they wanted to have a little classic "happily ever after" romance as part of the ending, surely they could've had a short scene or two earlier in the movie setting that up.

BTW, the Happily Ever After Scenes during the credits were entirely made up ( a true Hollywood ending). The book ends without showing anything back on Earth.

Yeah, the movie dragged about 10 minutes too long. Took the movie from great to good.

Should have ended with him reuniting with the crew and doing one last log entry.

Yeah, the "love train" credits sequence was so unnecessary. None of it added anything IMO. They could just as easily ended it after they got him.

I told my friend as we were leaving that it almost felt like it was supposed to end there and maybe like during screen tests the morons who watched gave the feedback said: "But,, But,,,,, We want to see them back on earth safe and sound with happy endings because we want everything spelled out for us because we are children!"

lol jk
