I've been meaning to post a thread dedicated to the Minutemen for quite awhile....
It's another one of those rock-n-roll "rags-to-riches" story that abruptly ended all too prematurely....
The Minutemen were probably one of the most influential Punk acts to emerge in the early 80s and immediately attracted quite a rabid following (not just in their native CA, but all throughout the country).... Their band name was so apt since most of their songs were 1 min or less in length, but they still would manage to unleash such fury and a different blending of styles in such a brief length.....
My Minutemen favorite album is "Double Nickels on the Dime" which in fact propelled them to even a higher rank of popularlity, however, tragically their singer/guitarist, D. Boon died a year later around Chirstmas-time in a fatal car-crash that in fact happened here in Phoenix...... He was just 27 at the time of his death, but his and the bands legacy is enormous.....
They inspired so many bands such as Fugazi, Janes Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sublime.... Sublime paid homage to them on "Waiting For My Ruca" when you hear at the beginning of that song a sampling of the Minutemen's song "History Lesson Pt. 2" from "Double Nickels on the Dime" the line... "punk rock changed our lives".....
Recently.. there was documentary released on them and it's only playing at select theatres and I hope it comes out on DVD soon.... Here's the trailer of it and you'd notice several music dignarities in it who were immensely impacted by the Minutemen.....
Then.. here's an unplugged in-studio performance of them recorded in 1984... It's them all scaled-down, but you can sense the spirit/enthusiasm they all had in their music.....
When Boon died... their bassist Mike Watt and drummer George Hurley teamed-up with an avid fan of the Minutemen to form Firehose.... Also.. Watt's has some solid solo albums and has worked with Porno for Pyros and has contributed to quite a few other bands as well.......
